Nike is suing New York-based company MSCHF for trademark infringement over their collaboration with rapper Lil Nas X to produce and market his “Satan shoes” that sport the Nike emblem as well as a drop of human blood in the soles of the shoes.
The shoe giant filed the lawsuit on Monday over the use of their trademark Air Max 97 design. Nike did not create the shoes and is not selling them.
The shoe marketing ploy is to promote the rapper’s latest video “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” The video is full of biblical references as well as mythological ones. Lil Nas X winds up doing a lap dance for the devil, breaking his neck, and then stealing his horns. The video is sexually graphic and in a word, what many would call immoral and promiscuously evil.
The shoes sold out on Monday at $1018 a pop. They were adorned with a pentagram and a reference to a Bible verse, Luke 10:18, which speaks of Lucifer’s fall from grace: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” 666 pairs were produced for sale.

The day after the music video was released, Lil Nas X fired back at detractors saying, “I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the s**t y’all preached would happen to me because i was gay,” he bemoaned. “So i hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and former Clemson University quarterback Trevor Lawrence both spoke out against the blasphemous video as well as the shoes.
“Our kids are being told that this kind of product is, not only okay, it’s “exclusive.” But do you know what’s more exclusive? Their God-given eternal soul. We are in a fight for the soul of our nation. We need to fight hard. And we need to fight smart. We have to win,” Noem tweeted out on Sunday.

The rapper lashed out at Noem in response: “ur a whole governor and u on here tweeting about some damn shoes. do ur job!”
To which Noem replied:

Conservatives and people of faith in America tend to be highly offended by incidents such as this one. However, a new Gallup poll just came out that shows church attendance has dropped below 50% for the first time in eight decades. Some contend that all of this shows that America as a whole may be in moral decline. But it should also be noted that 7 out of ten Americans are still affiliated with some form of organized religion.
Lil Nas X was not named as a defendant in the lawsuit. But after the suit was announced, he sent out a tweet that indicated he thought he might get nailed for his actions.

In Nike’s complaint, they petitioned the court to order MSCHF to “permanently stop” fulfilling orders for the “unauthorized” Lil Nas X Satan Shoes. They also noted that social media users are threatening to boycott the shoemaker over the Luciferian shoes.

“MSCHF and its unauthorized Satan Shoes are likely to cause confusion and dilution and create an erroneous association between MSCHF’s products and Nike,” Nike stated in its complaint. “In the short time since the announcement of the Satan Shoes, Nike has suffered significant harm to its goodwill, including among consumers who believe that Nike is endorsing satanism.”
“Nike filed a trademark infringement and dilution complaint against MSCHF today related to the Satan Shoes,” Nike said in a statement.
“We don’t have further details to share on pending legal matters. However, we can tell you we do not have a relationship with Lil Nas X or MSCHF. The Satan Shoes were produced without Nike’s approval or authorization, and Nike is in no way connected with this project,” they declared.
