Self-described “Florida Man” Matt Gaetz says that there is a clandestine anti-Trump GOP cabal already in the Congress that could jump on the impeachment bandwagon.
Naming names of some Republican foes of the president, the congressman who represents the Florida Panhandle area told FNC’s Jesse Watters that “There has secretly been an anti-Trump caucus in the Republican Party in Washington for a while. And I’m concerned that folks like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger and others might view this as an opportunity.”
In the past, both President Trump and Rep. Gaetz have criticized neocon Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney for championing endless war.
In the aftermath of the chaos at the Capitol, grandstanding Illinois Congressman Kinzinger has publicly supported the invoking of the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office.
On Watters’ World, the host described the incumbent POTUS as a crusader for the working class and expressed the belief that the end game for Democrats in impeaching a president on the verge of leaving office is to prevent him from running in 2024 as the standard-bearer of the MAGA movement.
GOP stalwart Gaetz — one of Trump’s most loyal and vocal supporters — offered an alternative theory: Impeachment is the only issue that can unify the radical Democrats and their semi-radical counterparts:
“The reason Democrats are talking about impeachment is because their hatred of President Trump is really the only thing that unifies this current constituency of Democrats. The Ilhan Omar-Alexandria-Ocasio-Cortez Democrats have very little in common with the Nancy Pelosi-Joe Biden Democrats other than a dislike of President Trump. So they are trying to keep together what is likely otherwise an ungovernable coalition on these absurd grounds.
“But the tragedy is it will harm the country. But they don’t care if something hurts the country if it helps them consolidate and take power, and that is totally the mood of the Democrats as we have this discussion.”
After the president is gone, Democrats are going to take it out on the American people, Watters claimed in an ominous footnote to the discussion.
Gaetz, who condemned the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, January 6, as well as the summer-long rioting by left-wing extremists, was one of the lawmakers who objected to the certification of the Electoral College vote.
He noted that he and his like-minded colleagues followed a process set forth in the U.S. Constitution “and for that, we got called a bunch of seditious traitors by the mainstream media and our Democrat colleagues.”
“It seems like Democrats only seek unity on their terms,” he added.
