U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has no chance of beating Chuck Schumer in a Democrat primary if she decides to launch a rumored bid to move up to the upper chamber in 2022. That is reportedly the assessment of the chair of New York’s Democrat Party.
Chairman Jay Jacobs went on to claim that an “absolutely” losing attempt in his view by AOC to unseat the U.S. Senate minority leader “would be a primary driven by ambition more than by need,” the New York Post reported. According to Jacobs, “Chuck Schumer has been a progressive force in the state for decades. She has a constituency that admires her and supports her, and they’re in her community, and I think it would be a loss for them if she were to do that.” Schumer has already ominously vowed to change America plus the world if the Democrats win both Georgia runoffs on January 5.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump expressed a different opinion, predicting that AOC would kick Schumer’s derriere if she runs against the 70-year-old career politician.
Nancy Pelosi and the House leadership recently snubbed AOC by denying her a seat on the coveted House Committee on Energy and Commerce in favor of a more “moderate” lawmaker, which perhaps is another indicator that the Democrat establishment is not particularly fond of her.
This decision came just a day after AOC, 31, the leader of the socialist “Squad” in the House, essentially called for Pelosi and Schumer to step aside in favor of new leadership.

Jacobs has chimed in about AOC before. In November, Jacobs chided AOC — who represents the 14th congressional district in New York, a solid blue Bronx-Queens area — for being too radical for most voters in competitive districts (and perhaps by extension, for a statewide run).
“AOC has no standing on how to run a general election in the suburbs and upstate. AOC is in a district that’s 6-1 Democrat and she couldn’t find a Republican in her district with binoculars. I invite AOC to come to Long Island and stand for election in one of our districts. You’ll see different results,” he asserted.
Perhaps in response to AOC’s influence in moving the Democrats in the U.S. House increasingly to the far left, the GOP won 25 of 26 toss-up seats in that chamber in Election 2020.
Last month, AOC downplayed her interest in seeking higher office and claimed instead she might leave politics and start a “homestead” somewhere. That is probably just posturing, however, because in general, elected officials almost always have their eye on the next job. AOC has also lamented the supposed lack of support that she is receiving from her own party.
