Iconic movie actor Rick Moranis was reportedly victimized in a random attack in the traditionally safe Upper West Side of Manhattan on Thursday morning, October 1.
Surveillance video (embedded below) depicts the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise star getting sucker-punched near Central Park West by an alleged assailant who appeared to be wearing an “I [heart] NY” hoodie and who calmly continued walking as Moranis, 67, fell to the ground.
The assault in Bill de Blasio’s New York City near West 70th street occurred in broad daylight at about 7:30 a.m. a short walk from the apartment where Moranis’s character in the original Ghostbusters lived in the movie, according to ABC Eyewitness News. Moranis apparently lives in the neighborhood in real life, too.
Moranis, 67, reportedly went to a local hospital on his own to be checked out for pain in his head, back, and hip. He subsequently walked to the nearby 20th precinct and filed a police report about the crime.
Investigators have not yet identified a motive, if there is one, but detectives have reportedly confirmed that the victim is indeed Rick Moranis.
The suspect is still at large, and via social media, the NYPD is requesting the public’s help in identifying him and tracking him down.

As quality of life deteriorates, longtime residents move away, and businesses close permanently because of stringent lockdowns, crime in New York City, including but not limited to gun violence, is surging.
Deeply unpopular across the political spectrum, far-left Mayor and failed 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Bill de Blasio’s response to the crime wave is, among other progressive initiatives, cutting $1 billion from the police budget, pulling down historical statues, and canceling the much-loved Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
Moranis, who also notably appeared in Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs, Parenthood, and The Flintstones, among his comedy roles, put his acting career on hiatus in the early 1990s when his wife passed away from breast cancer. “The actor left public life after her death to focus on being a single father, which he has no regrets over,” People recalled.
He is due to return to screen in the upcoming Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel from Disney and recently appeared in a TV commercial for a mobile phone company opposite Ryan Reynolds.
Although various Hollywood celebrities, including Reynolds, have passed along their best wishes to Moranis on social media, the reaction from ordinary citizens to the violent street attack is more meaningful. Here is a sample:

This is terrible. What did this guy ever do to anybody? Completely unprovoked attack of an older man. Fortunately there is video and the guy is probably going to be caught and prosecuted, as he should be. Hope Rick wasn’t hurt and recovers quickly.

People are not understanding that this guy was probably just punching to punch. Not because it was Rick Moranis.
