Twitter leftists threatened more riots and vowed to “Get Mitch or Die Trying” if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell moves to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died at 87 following a long battle with cancer.
In a statement, McConnell expressed condolences for Ginsburg’s passing but vowed: “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.”
Some pointed out that McConnell had stated in 2016 that Supreme Court justices should not be filled during an election year.
However, McConnell explained why the Senate will fill the vacancy as soon as possible.
Basically, McConnell said that in 2016, it made no sense to allow a lame-duck president to nominate a SCOTUS judge when he’s on his way out and the Senate and the president were of different political parties.
This year, the circumstances are different because the Senate and the president are from the same party. McConnell wrote:
“In the last midterm election before Justice Scalia’s death in 2016, Americans elected a Republican Senate majority because we pledged to check and balance the last days of a lame-duck president’s second term. We kept our promise.
Since the 1880s, no Senate has confirmed an opposite-party president’s Supreme Court nominee in a presidential election year.
By contrast, Americans reelected our majority in 2016 and expanded it in 2018 because we pledged to work with President Trump and support his agenda, particularly his outstanding appointments to the federal judiciary. Once again, we will keep our promise.”
Some legal experts say it’s imperative to fill the seat as soon as possible because if the November election results are contested (as Democrats have vowed), having eight justices and the possibility of a deadlocked court could ignite a Constitutional crisis.

Twitter also erupted with explicit threats of violence from left-wing media pundits like the Washington Post’s Laura Bennett: “If McConnell jams someone through, which he will, there will be riots.”

CNN alum Reza Azlan — an Iranian-American Muslim who got fired after calling Trump “a piece of sh*t” — warned that he’ll burn the country down if the Senate tries to replace Ginsburg.

Democrats are still furious that the Republican-led Senate refused to vote on district Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2016.
At the time, Republicans cited a 1992 speech by then-senator Joe Biden, where he urged then-President Bush to wait until after the election to replace a Supreme Court seat if it became vacant during that election year.
GOP strategist Ed Whelan explained that the “Biden Rule” only applies when the president and the Senate majority are of opposite parties. That’s not the case here, since both Trump and the Senate majority are Republican.
Whelan retorted: “Funny how Left (1) concocts claim that Biden rule applies in election years when president and Senate are of *same* party, and (2) forgets its own 2016 argument that Senate is constitutionally obligated to hold an up-or-down vote on a SCOTUS nominee.”
Conservatives remarked that if the situation were reversed and there was a Democrat president and Senate majority, Democrats would immediately fill the Supreme Court with a liberal judge.

Democrats have made no secret of their desire to pack the courts with left-wing activist judges. The naked power grab was so transparent that even Justice Ginsburg — a noted liberal — slammed the idea.
In July 2019, Ginsburg scolded Democrats for trying to pack the Supreme Court with left-wing activist judges.
In 2019, President Trump said he already earmarked a female jurist to replace Ginsburg if she retired that year: Illinois federal judge Amy Coney Barrett. Judge Barrett is widely considered the favorite to be nominated.
