President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign just got a boost from a major national police association.

The National Association of Police Organizations praised Trump for his “steadfast and very public support” for law enforcement as it announced an endorsement of his campaign on Wednesday. The police organization, which twice backed former President Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden, released the endorsement letter following a meeting with Trump on Monday.

The president thanked the organization for its “FULL & COMPLETE” endorsement, vowing to always back members of law enforcement.

The endorsement letter, signed by NAPO President Michael McHale, acknowledged the importance of having the president’s support “during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many.”

“We particularly value your directing the Attorney General to aggressively prosecute those who attack our officers,” he continued, adding other positive actions such as “your signing into law the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act; your advocacy and signing into law the legislation which permanently authorized funds to support 9/11 first responders and their families; your revitalization of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program to help reduce violent crime; and your unflagging recognition that America’s law enforcement officers, just like any other citizens, have Constitutional rights, too.”

The organization, which did not endorse any candidate in the 2016 election, represents 241,000 officers and more than 1,000 police associations.

The Trump campaign released a statement on Wednesday following the announced endorsement.

“President Trump fights everyday day for the cops that keep us safe. Joe Biden has done nothing to stop his party’s defund the police movement and remains silent as police officers across the country are being attacked by violent rioters and protesters,” Bob Paduchik, the campaign’s Senior Advisor for Law Enforcement and Labor Unions, said in the statement.

“This endorsement for President Trump highlights that as the Law and Order President, he is defending the hardworking people who risk their own lives every day to keep our communities safe,” he added.

Reacting to NAPO’s endorsement on Wednesday, Trump’s former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell tweeted simply, “Huge.”

The president on Monday doubled down on his support for law enforcement, asserting that his administration “is pro-safety, pro-police and anti-crime.”

“Our officers have been under vicious assault,” he said. “Reckless politicians have defamed our heroes as the enemy…These radical politicians want to defund and abolish the police.”

The mainstream media and many Democratic politicians have joined in verbal attacks on police departments and officers in the wake of George Floyd’s death while in Minneapolis police custody. Weeks of civil unrest and violent protests followed and police officers continue to face physical attacks as well as lack of support from local leaders.

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden has not come out to publicly condemn anti-police rhetoric. And while he has openly spoken against abolishing police departments, he has indicated that he supports the idea of redirecting funding.

In a recent interview, Biden even claimed recent police actions have made them “become the enemy” and expressed his view on the funding issue.

“Joe Biden was a very strong supporter of them years ago, and he’s been kidnapped now by the anti-police rhetoric,” Paul Digiacomo, president of the Detective Endowment Association, told Fox Business. “There’s a big question amongst our members if Joe Biden is going to stand up and support the police.”
