Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd let it be known that “teen takeovers” will not work out well for those involved in his Central Florida county, including neglectful parents.
“That’s not going to work in Polk County,” Judd explained. “There’s a whole lot of laws that not only hold juveniles responsible, adults responsible, but parents responsible for your children’s conduct, to include juvenile curfews.”
A “teen takeover” refers to a large gathering of teenagers who meet up in a public space such as a mall, beach, or city park and create mayhem. These flash-mob-like gatherings are often planned on social media apps like TikTok or Snapchat and result in widespread theft and damage.

“I guarantee you, they start acting a fool, tearing up businesses, fighting in the streets? We’re gonna light them up. All of them,” the sheriff said. “And then mommy and daddy, if you don’t hold them accountable personally – make sure they are home when they need to be — then we’re gonna come lock you up too.”
“Or charge you civilly, depending on which laws we can plug in,” Judd added. “But parents, hold your children accountable so we don’t have to. We will hold them accountable if you make us, but then we’re going to hold you accountable too.”
Polk County has a curfew in place for juveniles — those under 17 have to be home from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
