Cancel culture turns on its own: Wildly successful ‘Hamilton’ is now ‘deeply problematic’

Progressives who once hailed the musical “Hamilton” for its cultural impact are now calling it out as “problematic” as the cancel culture mob turned on its own.

As the film version of the wildly successful musical made its debut on the subscription streaming service Disney Plus over the weekend, the left decided the production based on founding father Alexander Hamilton is now trash because, in 2020, apparently all of America’s founders were racist slave-owners.

Democrats like former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and their families joined scores of other liberals in praising the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda after it made its Broadway debut in 2015. It gained even more prominence among progressives when actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who played Aaron Burr in the stage production,  read a statement from the stage during a performance, lecturing Vice President Mike Pence who was met with jeers from the audience when he and his family attended the show in 2016.

While the Broadway musical won 11 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for drama, landing in 2020 amid racial tensions, civil unrest and the frenzy to topple statues and vandalize monuments has given the film version of  “Hamilton” a different welcome.

The cancel culture seized on the debut of the film this weekend to light into the production and its creator, slamming Alexander Hamilton himself, an influential Founding Father who served as a member of President Washington’s first Cabinet, leading the Treasury Department.

A self-described “international human rights activist,” Ajamu Baracka, also slammed Miranda.

“Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Puerto Rican Uncle Tom who instead of fighting for independence makes feel-good revisionism for white liberals. He is pathetic,” Baracka tweeted.

“Hamilton is deeply problematic in concept and so is Lin Manuel Miranda to some degree,” one person tweeted, as “Hamilton” began trending on Twitter over the weekend.

Miranda was even criticized after it was reported that the Disney Plus app saw a 72 percent surge in downloads for the premiere of the film.

Miranda and “Hamilton” producer Jeffrey Seller took to social media back in May when they were criticized for not vocally supporting Black Lives Matter and allegedly being silent about police brutality amid the George Floyd protests.

“We spoke out on the day of the Pulse shooting. We spoke out when Vice President Mike Pence came to our show 10 days after the election. That we have not yet firmly spoken the inarguable truth that Black Lives Matter and denounced systematic racism and white supremacy from our official Hamilton channels is a moral failure on our part,” Miranda said in a video message.

“As the writer of the show, I take responsibility and apologize for my part in this moral failure,” the 40-year-old composer, producer and playwright added.

“‘Hamilton’ doesn’t exist without the black and brown artists who created and revolutionized and changed the world through the culture, music and language of hip-hop,” Miranda said. “Literally, the idea of the show doesn’t exist without the brilliant black and brown artists in our cast, crew and production team who breathe life into this story every time it’s performed.”

The weekend debut of the film, however, proved how fast things change as leftists moved in to cancel “Hamilton” because it’s now not woke enough.
