Super Tuesday snapshot: Biden wins big, Bernie lives to fight another day, Trump dumps on ‘biggest loser’

Joe Biden may be a walking gaffe machine with no off switch, but there is life yet for the former vice president as the Democratic alternative to self-avowed socialist Bernie Sanders.

With the Vermont senator riding momentum into Super Tuesday as the front-runner, voters from 14 states and U.S. territory Samoa went to the polls with more than 1,300 delegates at stake and there’s no mistaking that the big winner of the night was Biden.

Not that Sanders fared terribly, as he took the biggest prize of the night, California, which keeps him within striking distance as the 2020 Democratic primary is now a two-man race.

With some results still coming in, Biden swept the south, winning in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and added Minnesota and Massachusetts to the list.

MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki was representative of the surprise many on the left had over Biden’s performance.

“If it had been a week ago and you said at this hour it was going to be Joe Biden 167, Sanders 106 — I know Sanders has California coming, I know there’s a lot to come, and Texas — but this is shocking in just the span of a week,” he said early on in the evening.

“I just want to take one step back and give you a bigger picture look at the delegates that are coming into view right now,” Kornacki continued. “We are seeing Joe Biden roll up landslide numbers in the Southeast.”

True to his nature, while taking the stage Tuesday night to celebrate his gains, the walking gaffe machine known as Joe Biden would identify his wife as his little sister and his little sister as his wife.

Sanders managed to take four states, in addition to California, he won his home state of Vermont, Utah, and Colorado.

Maine is still too close to call, but both candidates lived to fight another day as seen in the AP delegate count below:

Which is more than can be said for Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who finished a distant third in her own state. It’s safe to say it’s all over but the crying for the senator whom President Trump often refers to as Pocahontas, over her past attempts to claim Native American heritage.

But the biggest loser of the night was billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who spent over half a billion dollars and failed to pick up a single state. He seems to have known his fate, as Bloomberg spent the day campaigning in Florida, which is two weeks away.

(Bloomberg did rack up enough votes to hang around as the potential safety valve for Democrats who are concerned about Biden being the nominee.)

President Trump took to Twitter late Tuesday to comment on the former mayor of New York City being the “biggest loser.”

“The biggest loser tonight, by far, is Mini Mike Bloomberg,” the president tweeted. “His ‘political’ consultants took him for a ride. $700 million washed down the drain, and he got nothing for it but the nickname Mini Mike, and the complete destruction of his reputation. Way to go Mike!”

Naturally, the president wouldn’t let Warren’s dismal showing go unnoticed.

Trump tweeted: “Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren, other than Mini Mike, was the loser of the night. She didn’t even come close to winning her home state of Massachusetts. Well, now she can just sit back with her husband and have a nice cold beer!”

Sanders told supporters in Vermont that he was “best positioned” to take on Trump and assured them that he would win the Democratic nomination for president.

“When we began this race for the presidency, everybody said it couldn’t be done,” he said in a speech. “But tonight, I tell you with absolute confidence we’re going to win the Democratic nomination and we are going to defeat the most dangerous president in the history of this country.”

As for Warren, she apparently has no intentions of getting out of the race just yet.

“There are six more primaries just one week away, and we need your help to keep up the momentum,” she told supporters in a statement.

Momentum???

While division was the order of the day for the Democratic Party, the opposing party cruises on toward November, as Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement Tuesday night that no one can compete with Trump.

“While the Democrat Party continues to splinter over which far-Left, socialist candidate they can stomach, Republicans are more united than ever behind President Trump,” McDaniel said in the release. “Just tonight, our party saw historic turnout numbers in several battleground states. President Trump’s record of results has fueled the momentum for our movement. We are expanding our unprecedented data-driven ground operation into 23 states and engaging with an ever growing base of supporters. Not a single Democrat presidential candidate can compete with President Trump in November.”

As for the aforementioned division, there was an immediate effort to attribute Biden’s success to the will of the voters, not the party establishment — the effort by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Pete Buttigieg to pull out of the race and rally behind Biden certainly paid dividends.
