Portland businesses close in fear of protests, Trump threatens to name Antifa ‘organization of terror’

Ahead of the dueling Antifa and right-wing protests in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to reveal that he is giving “major consideration” to designating Antifa an “organization of terror.”

“Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an ‘ORGANIZATION OF TERROR.’ Portland is being watched very closely. Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job!” the president tweeted.

On top of the Antifa groups protesting in Portland, hate groups like American Guard and Three Percenters are expected to also be protesting in the streets.

The FBI, the Federal Protective Service and numerous other law enforcement agencies are in Portland to monitor the dueling protests, which many predict could erupt into violence.

Mayor Ted Wheeler, whom Trump mentioned in his tweet, told Fox News’ “Outnumbered Overtime” that he’s confident Portland police can keep the peace.

“From a law enforcement perspective, we’re going to have all the tools and the resources and personnel we need,” he said.

Though the mayor is putting on a strong front, there is a worry among actual citizens.

Fox News contributor Guy Benson posted a photo to Twitter he said was sent to him by a Portland follower. The image showed a sign posted at a Starbucks saying, “Dearest customers, due to strong encouragement from the Portland Police Department and in preparation for the demonstrations this weekend we will be closed at 10:00 am Saturday, August 17. The safety of our partners and customers is our top priority.”

Starbucks is also not the only business closing its doors in preparation for the protests:

“I live in Portland and my wife’s work is closed due to the protests as well. Pathetic it’s to this point,” one Twitter user revealed.

The hate groups protesting on Saturday are reportedly showing support for the arrests of individuals who have been arrested at other protests.

The real concern, however, is Antifa, the masked leftists who have a long history of violence against journalists and anyone who disagrees with them.

Mayor Wheeler has been in hot water ever since video hit the web of conservative journalist Andy Ngo being brutally attacked by Antifa members. Despite Ngo going to the hospital and even leftists like Jake Tapper calling out the violent left-wing group, no major action has been taken in the city to combat the violence.

Ngo himself called the Saturday protests a “powder keg.”

“I’m really concerned about the Antifa versus right-wing protest happening tomorrow. I think it has the potential to be a powder keg,” he told “Fox & Friends.”

Many have taken to social media to express shock over the power Antifa seems to have on the city of Portland.

“Life under progressivism,” one user wrote in response to the sign posted outside of Starbucks.

“If this were my city I’d be protesting to replace the entire local government and police force. This is embarrassing,” another wrote.

Another replied, “It’s a sad day when law enforcement and private industry give way to anarchy.”
