Hollywood’s Rob Reiner fumes at anti-impeachment Dem: ‘Sorry if you lose your seat, but we’ve got to stand up…’

Unlike a majority of the American people, Hollywood actor Rob Reiner believes now is the time for the congressional Democrats to impeach President Donald Trump.

And so when blue-dog Democrat Congressman Jefferson Van Drew expressed his opposition to impeachment during an appearance Friday evening on MSNBC, Reiner let him have it.

“Unless we find something new or unusual, something different that we didn’t see before, it seems that this just keeps continuing,” Van Drew initially said to host Chris Matthews.

“First it was going to be the Mueller report was really going to give us the information, and it did. I read it from the first page to the last page, and it gave some information. And certainly there are some distasteful sections and parts of that that really are concerning, but not high crimes and misdemeanors, at least in my opinion, and obviously in other people’s opinions as well.”

Listen to the first part of the discussion below, via MSNBC’s “Hardball“:

This is perhaps why only a 37 percent minority of voters believe Democrats should begin impeachment hearings, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll published two days after former special counsel Robert Mueller testified before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees.

The congressman added that the Democrats best bet would be to stop obsessing over impeachment and start passing meaningful bills that address the American people’s concerns about infrastructure, healthcare, prescription drug costs, etc.

This is a point that’s been echoed by a number of others:

But Reiner was trying to hear none of this.

“I couldn’t disagree more with the congressman, because all of the issues that he talked about of course are critical,” he barked in exasperation when his turn to speak arrived. “None of them will ever, ever pass when we don’t have the White House and ultimately the Senate. We passed a million bills already, and they lay dormant at Mitch McConnell’s feet. That’s not going to do anything.”

“That’s because we are so involved. We are so involved with this only, or at least the perception of this only,” Van Drew responded.

Not to mention the fact that the majority of the bills Democrats have passed have been radical. One bill, the so-called “Equality Act,” passed two months ago by the Democrat-controlled House would force schools to allow male athletes to complete in female sports.

“No no no!” Reiner began repeating in disagreement.

“Look, I’m there every day. Let me just finish for a second,” the congressman tried to continue.

This time Matthews cut him off to ask him whether “seats like yours are in danger if the Democrats move toward impeachment.”

“Absolutely,” Van Drew replied. “Folks have to realize that it was middle Democrats, middle of the road Democrats, that created the majority. And that their voice counts too, and we have to — and by the way, if something really new comes up, something big that we didn’t have before that really shows an impeachable offense — absolutely. Any president.”

But as Mueller’s lengthy report released in April and his lackluster testimony this week revealed, there’s neither any there there or anything new.

Nevertheless, Matthews replied by asking the congressman “what happens if he gets away with that,” i.e., gets away with colluding with Russia (which he didn’t do) and obstructing justice (which he didn’t do).

Van Drew replied by stating that the Democrats’ obsession with impeachment is preventing them from “getting certain things done” and suggesting that impeachment efforts would fail given the lack of substantive evidence available to them.

And that’s when Reiner hit him with a ruthless (though delusional) uppercut.

“You need more to see?” he fumed. “There were five hard examples of obstruction of justice laid out in the Mueller report. What else do you need? The guy’s working with the Russians. He says he’s going to continue working with the Russians. The Russians are already playing.”

Mueller’s own report and testimony disputes that entire narrative.

“[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government in its election interference activities,” he bluntly said in his opening statement.

“We’ve seen the Senate Intelligence Committee tell us that they’re playing right now and they’re working hard to defeat us,” Reiner continued. “Are we now saying that we’re just going to give ourselves over to the Russians? We beat them in the Cold War, and they’re beating us now in the cyber war. And if we don’t stand up to them, it could be the end of our democracy. And I’m sorry if you lose your seat, but we’ve got to stand up for democracy.

Which is exactly what the Trump administration has been doing …

While it’s true he makes nice with Putin in public, behind the scenes he’s “approved a massive arms and aid package for Ukraine; expelled Russian diplomats; authorized multiple rounds of new sanctions against Moscow for everything from election interference to treaty violations; withdrawn from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty; persuaded NATO allies to increase their defense investments; and twice bombed Putin’s ally, the Assad regime, for Syria’s use of chemical weapons against civilians,” as noted by The Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen.

But who the hell cares, says Reiner, who’d rather that Van Drew and his Democrat peers in Congress risk sacrificing their seats to continue chasing after a Russian collusion delusion conspiracy theory that already been debunked and that very few Americans care about.

It sounds like one heck of a winning strategy going into the 2020 elections …
