Pelosi emerges from Dem meeting: ‘We believe the President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi emerged from a much hyped closed-door meeting with Congressional Democrats to accuse the President of the United States of being involved in a “cover-up.”

Pelosi scheduled the meeting Tuesday amid increasing pressure from the Democratic caucus to impeach President Trump, and met with leaders just before she and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are reportedly scheduled to have a White House meeting with Trump to discuss infrastructure spending.

Pelosi told reporters that it was a “very productive” meeting in they were “exchanging information and points of view” though she did not offer any specific conclusions that were drawn about further action.

“Five of our chairs who are doing oversight of the activities of the Trump Administration presented to the caucus,” she explained. “Mr. Cummings talked about the major decision which was very favorable for us, the court ruled in favor of the House Democrats. And Maxine Waters talked about the Deutsche Bank decision case, which is in court today in New York at 10:30 that case will come up. Mr. Schiff of the Intelligence Committee talked about the documents that now the Justice Department is willing to convey to present to the Intelligence Committee.”

Pelosi referred to them as three “current examples, within the last 72 hours, of progress that was made to get the truth and the facts for the American people,” adding that Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, gave the caucus the “context” for all that was happening at the beginning of the meeting.

“It was a very positive meeting, respectful sharing of ideas and I think very impressive presentations by our chairs, she added before slamming the president.

“We do believe that it’s important to follow the facts. We believe that no one is above the law, including the President of the United States,” she said.

“We believe the President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up. In a cover-up,” Pelosi concluded. “And that was the measure that we need.”

She deflected a question on impeachment as she walked away and made no mention of her meeting scheduled for later today with Trump.

“It’s not a question of persuasion. We were just exchanging information and points of view,” she said.

In March, the California Democrat had played down the impeachment push by her colleagues, saying that Trump is “just not worth it.”

“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country,” she told The Washington Post.

But with the impeachment drumbeat continuing, Pelosi has found it challenging to reign in Congressional Democrats thirsting for an end to the Trump presidency.

“Just as impeaching without cause could be construed, and is, politically motivated, choosing to not impeach when there is an abundance of cause could also be construed similarly,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told reporters Tuesday.

Rep. Doug Collins blasted Democrats on Tuesday during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in which former White House lawyer Don McGahn, who was subpoenaed to appear, was visibly absent.

“The special counsel closed up shop without giving Democrats anything to deliver to their base,” the Republican ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee said in a blistering speech. “Now the Democrats are trying desperately to make something out of nothing.”
