On Wednesday left-wing civil rights attorney Leo Terrell, a frequent Fox News guest who’s previously been described as “clearly insane” over the bizarre accusations he often spouts, accused conservative firebrand Candace Owens of being an attention seeker in search of her “15 minutes of fame.”
In fairness, Terrell at least had the temerity to issue this accusation to her face during a discussion with her on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” about the widely praised remarks she’d delivered a day earlier at a Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee hearing about white supremacist hate crimes.
The discussion initially began with Fox News host Laura Ingraham asking Owens to opine on why she thought Democrats were responding negatively to her remarks.
Listen to her reply below:
“I think it drew attention for a lot of reasons. I think in many ways, people on the right felt vindicated. I know there were a lot of moderate people that came over and realized that what I was talking about were actually real issues in black America,” she said.
Instead of humoring the Democrats’ obsession with the non-existent epidemic of white supremacist hate crimes, Owens had used her pulpit at the hearing Tuesday to highlight to the Democrats those genuine issues that actually affect the black community.
“I touched upon the literacy rates. 75% of black boys in California not being able to read is a problem in black America. … [B]lack on black crime, 90.1% of all homicides against black Americans are performed by other black Americans,” she explained to Ingraham and Terrell.
“The entire hearing, in my opinion, was a hoax, the continued hoax on black America, which comes to us from Democrats, who want us ultimately to fail by focusing on something that is not harming us, when you look at all of the other issues that we are facing.”
But instead of trying to refute her valid points with facts or reason, Terrell promptly jumped to trotting out a personal attack, which sadly is a common tactic among left-wing commentators.
“Right now, Candace Owens is getting 15 minutes of fame, and give me 30 seconds to prove my point,” he dismissively said. “She just again assumed that all Democrats are hoping that black people fail. On her interview with C-SPAN, she said the word nationalism has been compromised or poisoned by elitists. Tell that to the people in Charlottesville.”
If Democrats don’t want blacks to fail, then why do they keep trying to focus the black community’s attention on non-existent issues such as the alleged need for reparations?
Regarding Owens’ unapologetically nationalist views, it’s unclear why Terrell believes that the atrocious actions of a select few white supremacists who also just happen to espouse nationalist views is justification for all nationalists, including the president, to be labeled as white supremacists. It’s equivalent to saying all Muslims are terrorists because a few Muslims commit acts of terror.
Listen to his dismissive statement below:
He continued by accusing Owens of “playing the victim” and claiming that a large number of blacks and Jews support the Democrat Party. The assertion was admittedly true.
In response, the young conservative activist accused him of spouting ad hominem attacks.
“That’s a personal attack. … That was an ad hominem attack, and it was childish, and I’m not going to play these playground tactics with you,” she snapped back. “I’m going to keep the focus on black America and the things actually impacting us. This is an adult conversation that needs to be had.”
She added that it seems as if only conservatives genuinely care about the black community.
“The shootings in Chicago — it was Laura Ingraham who hosted and had a real conversation with people that were living in that neighborhood about things that are affecting them,” she said.
“And ultimately, this is why the #Blexit movement grows. This is why blacks are exiting the Democrat Party, because ad hominem attacks are not making people feel better about themselves. Ad hominem attacks are not going to impact our financial situation in black America. It’s unfortunate, because you consider yourself a civil rights leader. You’re just attacking me. You’re just attacking me. You haven’t actually offered anything that’s constructive for black America.”
Terrell then again returned to making an issue out of what Owens had said.
“Laura, does anyone watching your program honestly believe what she said?” he complained. “She said the Democrat Party wants black people to fail. See, those are talking points, Miss Owens, because you know deep down inside, just because you disagree with the Democrats, you cannot assume that Democrats want black people to fail. That is what you just that on national TV.”
Owens completed the discussion by noting that she has facts to back up her accusations. Because Terrell spent so much time attacking her instead of her points, it’s unclear whether he has any facts to back up his counter-assertion that her accusation is false.
One fact that Owens didn’t mention but that’s relevant to this discussion is the Democrats’ support for affirmative action policies that hurt young black students.
These policies hurt blacks by creating a mismatch wherein students of a certain intellectual caliber wind up at schools that don’t match them intellectually: “Students admitted based on their skin color, rather than their merit, may end up ‘mismatched’ with their school, which leads to low grades and high dropout rates,” The Heritage Foundation explained in a 2015 report.
This most commonly occurs when a student is accepted into a school higher than his or her intellectual pay grade because of a racially based, affirmative action admissions process.
“When a student’s entering credentials put him or her at the bottom of the class, it should come as no surprise when he or she switches to an easier major, drops out, or fails out. It’s become increasingly clear that affirmative action is doing more harm than good to the very people it is intended to help.”
