Santorum fits right in at CNN, says Trump’s plan to close border is ‘bad idea,’ then proves why it’s not

Former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum criticized President Trump’s plan to close the U.S.-Mexico border as a “bad idea” even while he unfolded every reason why it wasn’t.

The former Republican presidential candidate and current CNN senior political commentator seemed to miss the irony in his disapproval of Trump’s threat on the border as he followed with multiple examples of just why the plan is actually a good one.

“I think the idea of closing the border is a bad idea,” Santorum told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“I understand why the president’s doing it. He’s upset with Mexico. He has every reason to be upset with Mexico,” the two-term Pennsylvania senator added.

“Mexico could solve this problem. The people that are coming over, that are flooding, that are creating this crisis at the border are not Mexicans. They’re from — and Mexico is letting people from Honduras and El Salvador and Guatemala come through their country stacking up at the border, not controlling any kind of flow of immigration,” he argued.

And while Santorum admitted Mexico is not doing enough to stop Central American migrants from heading to the U.S. border, he simultaneously accused Trump of making charges against the country that are not “particularly helpful.”

“So the president is, you know, he does this,” Santorum explained. “He sort of flails and makes what I think are not particularly helpful charges against Mexico but the core of the problem is Mexico. And he needs to go after them.”

Last week, the president threatened to shut down the border if Mexico did not immediately stop the flow of illegal immigration into the United States.

Mexican officials have sounded the alarm over the forming of another potential caravan of people from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Venezuela, which they believe could reach about 20,000 in number.

Trump’s renewed threat to shut down the southern border came as U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that March was on track to become “the highest month” for border apprehensions in over a decade.

“If they don’t stop it we will keep the border closed. And we will keep it stopped for a long time. I’m not playing games,” Trump told reporters in Florida as he also announced he was cutting all foreign assistance to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

“Mexico is going to have to do something, otherwise I’m closing the border. I’ll just close the border. And with a deficit like we have with Mexico and have had for many years, closing the border would be a profit-making operation. When you close the border also you will stop a lot of the drugs from coming in,” Trump told reporters in Florida, according to The Hill.

“I will close the border if Mexico doesn’t get with it. If Mexico doesn’t stop it,” he added. “They come in from Guatemala, they come in from El Salvador, they come in from Honduras, they come in from all over, and they come in from Mexico. And we’re working very hard to stop it.”

Santorum noted the problems with Mexico not doing enough about the immigration problem, but still thought Trump’s plan to send a strong message while protecting Americans was a “bad idea.” Twitter users let him know exactly what they thought of his opinion.
