'Chuck and Nancy' start trending hard after Trump's targeted tweet triggered them ... get the popcorn

Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are longing for the good old days.

The Dems became upset over a tweet President Trump launched criticizing the two on Tuesday. Trump said he was preparing to meet with “Chuck and Nancy” but didn’t “see a deal” to keep the government open due to their weak stances on crime, immigration and taxes.

The tweet must have hit home, because Pelosi and Schumer fired back with a response that will likely, albeit unintentionally, put one more feather in the president’s cap. The leading Democrats said that they wouldn’t meet with the president, but would still like to discuss a deal with establishment Republicans.

“There is so much to do. We are eager to get it done,” Schumer said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “The President isn’t, but hopefully Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan are.”

“Given that the president doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead,” they said.

Speaker of the House Ryan and GOP Majority Leader McConnell responded with a joint statement of their own: “There is a meeting at the White House this afternoon, and if Democrats want to reach an agreement, they will be there.”

So, where does that put President Trump? On the outside… exactly where he likes it.

Trump’s been a roll with controversial tweets, but Tuesday morning’s “Chuck and Nancy” special had Twitter trending their names:

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny thought “Chuck and Nancy” bolting on Trump was a bad thing for Trump, and warned the president that tweets have “consequences.”

Democrat Congressman Ted Lieu was also under the impression that this was somehow a bad thing for the president:

But much of the feedback on Twitter mocked “Chuck and Nancy” for being too “chicken” to meet with Trump.
