The good times weren’t rolling for Mayor John Gardner of Aynor, South Carolina, when he was pulled over by police for driving in the street on a lawn mower. What’s more, Gardner allegedly had an open can of beer while operating his garden vehicle at night.
What the hell was he thinking?
Some on social media joked that Gardner should be charged with MUI (mowing under the influence). Here’s another one: “I love you mower today than yesterday, but not as mulch as tomorrow.”
Dashcam video of the hare-brained incident shows the events unfolded at 8:30 p.m. on August 25. Police in Horry County, South Carolina, pulled Gardner over after they claim he was swerving in the street on his lawn mower.
“You have an open container of Miller Light,” an unidentified officer is heard telling Gardner. “You were drinking going down the road.”
A second officer chimed in: “You ain’t supposed to have that, you know that. Am I right or am I wrong?”
Gardner is heard apologizing for the incident. “I know, I apologize for that,” said Garder, who is also the chief financial officer for Horry County Schools.
The police are then heard ordering Gardner to empty the beer can on the street.
Gardner later called the incident a “misunderstanding,” and said he was not cited. He also claimed his beer can was not open, and that he opened it at the officers’ request to empty it.
“It was unopened to the best of my knowledge,” Gardner told the News & Observer. “I remember opening it to pour it out.”

Gardner said he had purchased the beer at a gas station after stopping to put gas in the lawn mower after he had cut his mother-in-law’s grass.
The mayor said he was pulled over because he didn’t have any lights on (what an idiot). “It was just a misunderstanding,” he said.

It’s unclear if the incident will hurt Gardner at the polls. John Gardner, who was elected in 2016, is up for re-election this year in the tiny town of Aynor (population: 763).
