Magical moment Disney’s Mickey presents foster care siblings with the surprise of a lifetime

“When you wish upon a star your dreams come true,” is a line from theme song for the Walt Disney production of “Pinocchio,” and could have also been the theme for two foster children visiting the Magic Kingdom. (Full video can be viewed at end of post).

Foster parents Tom and Courtney Gilmour decided to break the news of their adoption of their foster kids, Janielle and Elijah Gilmour, ages 12 and 10, during a trip to Disney World last April.

“We planned it as soon as we got the [official] date, which was the Friday before our trip,” Courtney told Fox News.

When they arrived at the theme park, Courtney collected celebration buttons for the kids, including, unbeknownst to them, adoption buttons, and proudly tweeted a photo of the collection.

Disney World got wind and when they confirmed with Courtney that the family was already at the park, they decided to help the new parents break the news during a private meeting with Mickey Mouse himself.

“They got in contact me within minutes,” Courtney said. “I really just thought they were going to give us a free dessert, and I would’ve been completely happy with that!”

Rather than cake and ice cream, Walt Disney World set up a Memory Maker package for the kids, with Mickey lending a hand in announcing to Janielle and Elijah that they’re now officially and legally members of a family.

“When we got there, we knew it was going to happen, we just didn’t know when it was going to happen,” Courtney told Fox.

During the family’s meet-and-greet with the famous cartoon mouse, a Disney employee announced, “Mickey has something really special to share with you guys.”

At that point, he displayed a small sign indicating that the children’s adoption date was set for May 24. Courtney posted the full video of the event to her Facebook page.

Reporter defies WH and livestreams audio briefing, but did she REALLY think this through?

“We were kind of shocked,” Courtney admits. “They didn’t give a heads up … but Janielle’s reaction was just so natural and pure. They said, ‘Get the family in there!’ and I was like, yeah! We’re the family!’”

Prior to the adoption, Tom and Courtney had been Janielle and Elijah’s foster parents for three years. And what are they now?

“We are all happy Gilmours,” Courtney said.

Courtney announced earlier this week that their video went off-the-charts viral.

Um, make that two million now, Courtney.

In a week filled with bad news, fake news and political rancor, the Gilmour’s story came as a sorely-needed tonic for the soul.
