An American Airlines flight attendant believes her uniform is literally making her sick.
The airline company’s official uniform has compromised the health of thousands of employees like Heather Poole, who alleges that “chemicals” in the uniform have made her ill.
“I get sick every time I go to work,” Poole wrote in a blog where she has continued to document her experiences over the last few months.”Every time I go to work I feel terrible,” she added, stating that in her two decades as a flight attendant, she had “never felt like this before.”
Why can’t they just say uniform? This is exactly what I complained about in my post about the media. https://t.co/RgcCxv9wdv

Poole claimed nearly 3,000 American Airlines employees have had “serious reactions” like rashes, hives and respiratory issues due to the uniforms, which the company debuted in September. Flight attendants for Alaska Airlines apparently suffered the same health problems and thyroid issues a few years ago when they used uniforms from the same manufacturer, Poole noted.

Though she switched to look-alike uniform pieces and her doctor increased her medication, Poole, who has hypothyroidism, still found herself getting sick when she was even around others wearing the uniforms.
“Now I feel sick when I’m around co-workers in uniform. When I go to work my chest gets tight. My heart races. I feel short of breath. I have to clear my throat constantly and I cough all the time,” she wrote. One visit to the hospital emergency room set her back $800 and left her with an inhaler and a prescription for steroids.
THANK YOU. The chemicals in the uniform are endocrine disrupters. They affect fertility. My thyroid was affected after 6 days in uniform https://t.co/LCLKzWDB5Q

But the airline company is not planning to recall the uniforms, Poole explained, because testing has confirmed that they are safe.
“Let the record state that I can’t prove that any of my health problems are in fact caused by my wearing the uniform. This is how the uniform manufacturer continues to get away with it,” Poole wrote. “The burden of proof lies on me. It’s also why American refuses to recall the uniform. Because we have not yet been able to prove what, exactly, is making us sick.”
Pilots for the airline have also reportedly complained about chemicals in their uniforms, but have been taken more seriously, she believes.
Poole, a New York Times best-selling author with a large social media following, also claimed that “sexist co-workers” and internet trolls have become a problem since she has made her public comments about the uniforms.
Since my piece about sexism seems to be getting a lot of attention now, here’s what I wrote. Read it. https://t.co/K3AwdWALez

“Over the last nine months, I was called ‘psycho’ and ‘crazy’ and ‘media whore,'” Poole wrote in her most recent blog post where she denounced the gender stereotypes that have belittled the issue because it was seen as coming from “hysterical women who moan and whine.”
“The sexy flight attendant script won’t die. I blame the media for this,” she wrote.
She also hoped that American Airlines would make a move and take the complaints more seriously.
I want to remind everyone how thankful I am to have your support. Every. Single. Person. The uniform crisis is huge. Thanks for listening

“And so we wait…for more people to have reactions to the uniform. What’s the magic unimportant sick people number? We know it’s not 5,000. Maybe 10,000?” Poole wrote. “While we wait, we hope more important people will start to report reactions so the media will cover our story the way it deserves to be covered.”
