Otto Warmbier deserved to be tortured in North Korea and die because he was a privileged white male. That’s what leftist media bleated in 2016 when Warmbier was arrested for taking a poster from a hotel in Pyongyang.
Warmbier, then a 22-year-old college student, had been visiting North Korea as part of a tour with a China-based tour operator.
Left-wing nuts laughed about Otto Warmbier’s capture
Otto was charged with spying by the paranoid North Korean regime, which then sentenced him to 15 years in prison. Warmbier spent the next 18 months rotting in jail before being returned to the United States last week in a coma. This week, Warmbier died of apparent brain damage.
While Otto’s family and patriotic Americans mourn the loss of a young man struck down in his prime, Twitter recalled how leftist media including Salon, the Huffington Post, the Comedy Channel, Ebony magazine, and Bustle gleefully celebrated Warmbier’s 2016 arrest.
Instead of being outraged or sympathetic that a fellow American was unlawfully detained by a murderous regime, liberals cheerfully blamed Warmbier for his arrest.
Leftists: Otto deserved what he got because he’s white
Basically, leftists said Otto was a privileged white male who deserved what he got for pulling a frat-boy stunt by stealing a poster.

Liberals didn’t blame the Iranian-Americans who were jailed during Obama presidency
Meanwhile, liberal media outlets did not assign any blame to the 4 Iranian-Americans who were jailed in Iran during Barack Obama’s presidency.
While Obama reportedly told Otto Warmbier’s dad to stay silent about his son’s captivity, he worked tirelessly to negotiate the release of the Iranians jailed in Iran.
It bears noting that Iran felt it had the right to arrest those prisoners because they held dual citizenship (Iran and United States). Tehran does not recognize dual citizenship, and treated the arrests as a domestic matter.
In contrast, Warmbier was 100% a United States citizen. North Korea had absolutely no “claim” on him, and therefore, no right to detain him like that.
In January 2016, the 4 Iranian-Americans jailed in Iran were released after the Obama administration delivered a ransom of $400 million in cash (that’s taxpayer money).
So what was the difference between Otto Warmbier and the Iranians Obama worked so hard to free? Here are their names:
- Amir Hekmati
- Saeed Abedini
- Jason Rezaian
- Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari.
From the outside, it seems Otto Warmbier might have lived — and Obama might have worked harder to secure his release — if only Otto had darker skin or a different religion.
So, did Otto deserve to die because he was white? No. Did he die because he was white? You do the math.
