‘One down, 216 to go…’ Freshman GOP congresswoman receives bone-chilling threat hours after shooting

After the shooting targeting Republican lawmakers and that left Rep. Steve Scalise critically injured, a freshman upstate New York GOP congresswoman received an email predicting that other shootings would follow.

Rep. Claudia Tenney received the email that asked, “Did you NOT expect this?” and had “One down, 216 to go…,” as its subject line.

“Did you NOT expect this? When you take away ordinary peoples very lives in order to pay off the wealthiest among us, your own lives are forfeit. Certainly, your souls and morality were lost long before. Good riddance,” the email said.

Tenney spokeswoman said in a statement that the timing of the email was “disheartening” after the events earlier that day.

“Although our office receives threats like these regularly, today’s message was particularly disheartening following this morning’s tragic events.”

“The level of discourse in politics today is truly unfortunate. Our nation was founded on the principle of free speech, and it’s vitally important that we have a robust debate on the issues. However, protections under the first amendment do not extend to violence,” Andrews added.

One of those threats she referred to was posted to Tenney’s official Facebook page aimed directed at her son, an active duty U.S. Marine serving in the Middle East. The Memorial Day post said, “Waiting on your son to come back bagged,” according to a screenshot provided by Tenney’s office.

The threatening email has since been turned over to Capitol Hill police officers.

The alleged gunman, James Hodgkinson, opened fire on Republican lawmakers Wednesday who were practicing for a charity baseball game to be held Thursday against Congressional Democrats.

Hodgkinson was described as a fan of Sen. Bernie Sanders who despised the GOP and President Donald Trump. Rep. Mark Walker told NBC News that he thought the “gunman was there to kill as many Republican members as possible.”

After the shooting, which left five injured including two Capitol Hill police officers, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced on the House floor that “an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”
