Florida lawmakers complain about Trump’s security costs

The cost of protecting President-elect Donald Trump when he visits his Palm Beach home is causing Florida members of Congress to complain.

Florida lawmakers have asked the Justice and Homeland Security departments for a reimbursement of thousands of dollars that  Palm Beach County has spent providing security for Trump, The Hill reported.

Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Sen. Marco Rubio joined with Democrat Reps. Alcee Hastings, Ted Deutch , Lois Frankel and Patrick Murphy in a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson asking the county to be repaid for expenses using a resolution Congress passed last month.

Congress recently allocated $7 million to pay for local law enforcement costs in protecting the president-elect, but that amount seems inadequate.

“As an example of the escalated expenditures, over the four-day Thanksgiving holiday the County incurred a cost of $250,000 as a result of security protection of the President-elect,” County Mayor Paulette Burdick wrote to the congressional delegation, according to the Palm Beach Post.

“The burden of security costs incurred during his visit last month should not fall solely on the residents of Palm Beach County,” Rep. Deutch said. “I will work to support the County’s request to make sure the Palm Beach County taxpayers are sufficiently reimbursed for the additional funds spent to keep the President-elect safe.”

Trump is spending 10 days at his oceanfront home, Mar-a-Lago, over the Christmas holiday. And while Palm Beach County does not have an estimate for the cost of security for the president-elect, that amount is sure to increase once he is sworn in.

For Rep. Lois Frankel, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter, not providing Trump with added security during his visits is not an option for the county, the Post reported.

“You can’t not do it,” she said. “The president must be kept safe.”
