With Christmas at the door, many of us will eventually be cozied up in front of the TV watching films that have become our favorite holiday staple.
From classics like “Miracle on 34th Street” or “It’s a Wonderful Life” to hits like “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “Home Alone” and “Elf,” cable networks across the U.S. geared up their playlists to suit the season.
One website mapped out which films are most popular per state and region.
The American Movie Classics channel ranked the top 20 holiday films in order of their popularity.
CableTV.com then took the data and cross-referenced it with Google trends by state, over the last 10 years to find out which of the films were most viewed in each state and came up with the below map.
We were curious about what films our BPR readers love. Almost everyone has a favorite Christmas movie. So, which of the classics on the list jingles your bells the most?

The 1990 cult hit “Home Alone”, starring Macaulay Culkin, is the most popular in 9 of the 50 states, CableTV.com compiled.
The 1989 Christmas hit “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” starring Chevy Chase, was favorited in 5 states.
The 2003 holiday comedy “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell, was most desired in 8 states.
“Scrooged” (1998), starring Bill Murray, is in the most demand in four states as is Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” starring Jimmy Stewart.

- Nicole Haas/Editor/Writer: My fave Christmas movie by FAR is “A Christmas Story” because who doesn’t appreciate political incorrectness, tough love, guns, and old school antics? I even have a leg lamp proudly displayed in my Christmas decor, tho no one has ever commented on it. Next, would be “It’s a Wonderful Life” because it is.”
- Carmine Sabia/Writer: “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” is my favorite by far. It is a timeless tale of a reindeer and an elf who were bullied but, rather than finding a safe space and complaining, overcame it and became heroes.”
- Michael Dorstewitz/Writer:Â “It’s a Wonderful Life” is classic — but so is “Miracle on 34th Street.” That one epitomizes the famous “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” letter to the New York editor and the editor’s beautiful response.
- Tom Tillison/Writer:Â ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ for me…
- Scott Morefield/Writer:Â It’s a really close contest between “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, because of the classic ‘real meaning of Christmas’ scene at the end, and “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but if I had to choose it would probably be the latter because I enjoy the classic black and white movies that speak to a simpler time.
- Samantha Chang/Writer: “Elf”. It’s hilarious. I also love the fantastic scene where Will Ferrell sings “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with Zooey Deschanel.
- Frieda Powers/Writer:Â I’m completely TORN between “Elf” and “Rudolph” but since I have to choose…I will go with timeless, childhood-fave RUDOLPH.
