Putin calls Dem Party ‘sore losers,’ then offers Trump a Christmas olive branch to restore broken relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin unleashed a stinging attack on U.S. Democrats for being sore losers.

“The current administration and the leadership of the Democratic Party are trying to blame all their failures on external factors,” Putin said at his annual news conference in Moscow on Friday, according to a Reuters report.

“(We are talking about) a party which has clearly forgotten the original meaning of its own name,” he said, speaking of Democrats. “They are losing on all fronts and looking elsewhere for things to blame. In my view this, how shall I say it, degrades their own dignity. You have to know how to lose with dignity.”

Putin dismissed accusations by President Obama and U.S. intelligence officials that Russia meddled with the U.S. election and  helped President-elect Donald Trump to victory.

“It’s not like that,” he said. “All of this speaks of the current administration’s systemic problems.”

The Russian president spoke positively about Trump, however.

“Trump understood the mood of the people and kept going until the end, when nobody believed in him,” Putin said, adding, “Except for you and me.”

As for Trump’s plans to boost the U.S. nuclear arsenal, which he posted on Twitter Thursday, Putin was unfazed and said his own comments earlier that Russia’s military was “stronger than any potential aggressor” had been misunderstood.

“In the course of his election campaign he (Trump) spoke about the necessity of strengthening the U.S. nuclear arsenal, and strengthening the armed forces. There’s nothing unusual here,” Putin said, admitting that the “U.S. military was the most powerful in the world.”

“Nobody is arguing with that,” he said during the nearly four-hour news conference. “If anyone is unleashing an arms race it’s not us,” he added, in response to Trump’s reported comments Friday to “Let it be an arms race.”

Trump’s transition team released a letter from Putin to the President-elect on Friday that asked to “restore the framework of bilateral cooperation” between the two nations.

In what may set liberal heads exploding, Putin offered Christmas and New Year’s greetings and extended a hand to Trump to move the U.S. and Russia past the divide of the last few years under Obama.

“I hope that after you assume the position of the President of the United States of America we will be able — by acting in a constructive and pragmatic manner — to take real steps to restore the framework of bilateral cooperation in different areas as well as bring our level of collaboration on the international scene to a qualitatively new level,” he said.

Trump called it “a very nice letter” in a statement and said “his thoughts are so correct,” according to the Washington Times. “I hope both sides are able to live up to these thoughts, and we do not have to travel an alternate path.”
