What would Jesus do? Why, Jimmy Carter just told the Huffington Post

Apparently ex-President Jimmy Carter knows what Jesus would do. At least that is the impression we get after Carter insisted that Jesus would be on the left’s side on at least two major moral issues.

In an interview with the liberal Huffington Post, Carter insisted that Jesus would approve of two of the left’s most sacred tenets; gay marriage and abortion.

“I believe Jesus would approve of gay marriage,” the former president said when asked about the issue during the interview.

Carter went on to claim that Jesus would be in favor of literally any sort of sexual arrangement if the parties were “honest and sincere” about their relationship.

But some may say this claim would take sexual behavior out of the realm of morality — which usually has a code or a series of rules — and instead place it in the realm of the “feelings” of the participants and that is something that defies the rules-based ideal of morality. Relying on “feelings” means that literally anything would be OK if only the participants feel it is OK.

That would certainly open things up to facilitate the approval of many behaviors that even today most people think is wrong.

Carter wasn’t done presuming what Jesus would do, though. He next said that Jesus would also be in favor of abortion, but in this case the Georgian was more limited in his assumptions of Jesus’ thought pattern.

The former prez said that Jesus would favor abortion but only in the cases of “rape or incest or if the mother’s life was in danger.”

So, Carter seems to insist that Jesus would find that life was sacred unless it is the life created by rape or incest and in that case Jesus would punish the innocent life with a death sentence. Seems a bit incongruous, doesn’t it?

Transcript of Segment:

Carter: “That’s no problem with me. I think everybody should have a right to get married regardless of their sex and the only thing I’d draw a line on, I wouldn’t be in favor of the government being able to force a local church congregation to perform gay marriages if they didn’t want to. But those two partners should be able to go to the local courthouse or to a different church and get married. That’s no problem.”

“I have had a problem with abortion, you know, and this has been a long time problem of mine. I have a hard time believing that Jesus, for instance, would approve abortions unless it was because of rape or incest or if the mother’s life was in danger. So, I’ve had that struggle but my oath of office was to obey the Constitution and the laws of this country as interpreted by the Supreme Court. So, I went along with that. But that’s been the only caveat, so when I….”

HuffPo Host: “Would Jesus approve of gay marriage?”

Carter: “I believe he would, I believe Jesus would. I don’t have any verse and scripture…”

HuffPo Host: “No, no, no, but I just, intuitively, yeah.”

Carter: “I believe Jesus would approve of gay marriage. But I’m not… that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else. And I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else.
