A U.S. Army veteran said he was acting on instinct when he intercepted a robbery attempt at a Maryland store and lost his job as manager for his actions.

When two men attempted to rob the Beltsville CVS store last week, Joe Morici did what he was trained to do. “My main concern was just everyone’s safety in the building,” he said. “I reacted out of instinct.”

With a tour of duty in Afghanistan and seven years in the Army under his belt, Morici sprang into action when the suspects jumped over the pharmacy counter and ordered the safe to be opened, according to FOX 5 TV. After directing the cashiers to call 911, Morici confronted the men who were allegedly escaping with prescription drugs they had stolen.

One of the suspects attempted to hit the veteran with a screwdriver but Morici blocked him. A struggle unfolded at the door of the store before the suspects got away.

But instead of praise for his heroic efforts, Morici’s management position was terminated that same day. “It’s not a good feeling,” Morici told FOX 5. “I’ve never been let go from a position– especially something like that.”

In a statement to the station, a CVS spokesman responded:

“In the unfortunate event of a robbery at one of our stores, the safety and well-being of our customers and employees is always our highest priority. We do not comment on specific security procedures or policies as we do not want to undermine them.”

Since moving to the area for the purpose of managing the store, Morici said he was not sure what he was going to do next. He has received a lot of support however, and has even applied for a position with the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Perhaps his bravery and instinct to protect people will be more appreciated there.
