Boy, 12, dragged by bus after backpack gets caught in door

A shocking video shows a young schoolboy being pulled by a bus after his bag and arm became caught in the doors.

The footage is frightening, showing 12-year-old Nathaniel of Melbourne, Australia, pulling his knees to his chest to avoid being dragged on the road as the bus continued to drive 350 meters before the driver noticed something was wrong.

A Melbourne mother is demanding answers after her 12-year-old son was pulled for 350 metres by a bus in Wheelers Hill.

She says the boy’s schoolbag became caught in the doors, leaving him hanging on with one arm as the bus drove off.

The child’s mother, Grace, is demanding answers.

“As a child, you don’t really realise the seriousness of it, but as a parent and as a mum, I know how dangerous it was. And you know, he could have died,” she explained to the Today show. “His whole body was outside the door, and the bus driver didn’t check his mirrors and then just took off with him on the outside.”

She pointed out that her child had to lift his legs to avoid being dragged along the street.

“Honestly, if he was a taller student or a weaker student, there was no way that he would be able to hang on, you know, for the distance on the side of a moving bus at that speed.”

Grace also noted that the next bus stop was the only reason her son was able to be freed, not because anyone alerted the driver that there was a child hanging on the outside of the vehicle.

“The back door only has one sensor in the middle of the door, and Nathaniel was caught under the sensor, so it didn’t trigger any, you know, alarms or anything,” she said. “However, the door wasn’t fully closed. You know, his arm was caught in it. You would think that that would have been a safety feature of the bus to at least, you know, have another alarm for that.”

The child is being treated for anxiety after his ordeal, and still has negative reactions to buses.

“He’s no longer able to catch the bus by himself. He gets panic attacks when he sees a bus of a similar, you know, advertisement.”
