Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger says it’s not a sanctuary state, but her suspicious actions say otherwise

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

The law enforcement veteran and InVest USA founder believes the struggling governor’s flippant actions can’t be ignored.

Last November, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger managed to run as a moderate in the gubernatorial race, with many voters believing she could make a difference. But ever since she entered office, she’s taken a turn on her policies, undoing an important agreement with the Department of Homeland Security and protecting illegal immigrants who have been responsible for heinous criminal activities within her state.

As a result, voters have turned on her after just a few months in office. But as her numbers reach new lows, she’s actually come out of the woodwork to “fire back,” as it were, and explain where she currently stands. But, honestly, it’s all too clear to see where exactly that is.

After doing away with Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s previous 287(g) cooperation agreement with the Department of Homeland Security – and thus cutting off any thorough working-together with ICE agents – she noted, “Virginia is not a sanctuary state – full stop.”

She continued, “There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Certainly, everything that you might read on Twitter (X) is not real, but it’s actually pretty outrageous some of the things that have been reported along the way.”

She kind of lost me at “full stop,” because…well, it’s a bit blatant a statement. And why can’t she clarify just what’s happening with the cooperation between her law enforcement and ICE agents then?

Not to mention that, again, a number of criminal acts have been carried out by illegal immigrants – some that have yet to be taken into custody.

There’s also the matter of the Virginia State Police, who were one of the state agencies that she felt she could not put personnel under when it came to Department of Homeland Security supervision.

“I feel very strongly about that because (VSP) is a top-notch law enforcement agency,” she noted. “And I don’t think it is responsible for us or me as a governor or the Commonwealth of Virginia to put Virginia State Police under the supervision or direction of ICE.”

That also sounds like a suspect statement. Why wouldn’t you want to have local law enforcement work side-by-side with ICE to capture these suspects who have been committing crimes in your state?

Spanberger also made it clear that she has not banned Virginia officers from cooperating with ICE, even if they’re not under their orders. But…there’s another issue.

See, according to this report, a bill from Senator Saddam Salim is currently sitting on Spanberger’s desk, which actually would stop agencies from entering into any sort of agreements tied in with the Department of Homeland Security or, for that matter, ICE. And she hasn’t rejected it, and she could literally sign it at any time.

See, a lot of voters see right through her façade, and have even made her net favorability the lowest it’s been since the 1990’s. And how did she respond? How else? Denial.

“I would say if everybody hated me, why is everybody putting my face on their mailers for the referendum (on) question number one?” she asked.

But the report makes it clear – the Commonwealth is working to redraw congressional maps, and doesn’t support her in the least.

In a nutshell, she started out as a moderate and eventually turned far-left, believing that she should protect illegal immigrants rather than allowing her own law enforcement to work alongside the DHS.

And with the overturning of Youngkin’s 287(g) arrangement, she’s actually protecting some of these criminals. This includes 44-year old Marco Tulio Lopez-Romero, who, according to ICE, had a warrant issued for arrest concerning homicide back in 2017. (Thankfully, he’s in custody.)

This is just another case of a politician who swears they’re doing the “right” thing but everyone can see right through it, and the disaster that she has brought upon herself. And rather than admitting her mistake and trying to right the wrongs, she’s pointing fingers all over and refusing to blame herself. That sounds like panic to me. Full stop.

Thankfully, the Commonwealth – and for that matter, Virginia voters – have a chance to cast her out before she can do further damage. The last thing we need is someone dishonest who could steer the state in the completely wrong direction. Give us strong leadership!
