Alvin Bragg resurfaces, office to probe Swalwell over alleged sexual assault

Allegations that Rep. Eric Swalwell sexually assaulted a former staffer while in a New York City hotel prompted the launch of an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Swalwell’s political career is in free fall after reports published by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN on alleged sexual misconduct, and now, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has announced an investigation.

Bragg, a Democrat, prosecuted Donald Trump in 2024 with the jury in the criminal trial finding Trump guilty on 34 felony counts.

“We urge survivors and anyone with knowledge of these allegations to contact our Special Victims Division at 212-335-9373,” Bragg’s office said in a statement, according to NBC 4 New York.

“Our specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors are well-equipped to help you in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered manner,” the statement continued.

CNN reported:

“The former staffer told CNN that she was heavily intoxicated after a night of drinking with Swalwell in New York City i April 2024 when she woke up to him having sex with her in his hotel bed.

“I was pushing him off of me, saying no,” the woman told CNN of the incident, which she said happened after she had stopped working in Swalwell’s office. “He didn’t stop.”

The woman was one of four who described allegations of misconduct by Swalwell, who is running for California governor.

The California Democrat, who suspended his gubernatorial campaign, has denied the allegations.

“These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the frontrunner for governor,” Swalwell said in a statement. “For nearly 20 years, I have served the public as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and, where necessary, bring legal action. My focus in the coming days is to be with my wife and children and defend our decades of service against these lies.”

Nearly 60 former staffers released a letter announcing solidarity with the victim and calling on Swalwell to step down from Congress.

“We stand unequivocally with our colleague, who showed extraordinary courage in coming forward to share her truth. We believe her,” the letter signed by 55 former employees stated.

“No statement, no cease-and-desist letter, and no claim of political motivation changes what our colleague experienced,” the ex-staffers wrote, calling for “a full and thorough investigation” to be launched “without delay.”

“No one is above the law. Not a congressman. Not a candidate for governor. No one,” they wrote.
