Eligible young men will automatically be registered for US military draft later this year

A proposed new rule may see eligible men automatically registered for the military draft by the end of this year.

The proposal submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs last month by the Selective Service System (SSS) put forth the change, proposing that men ages 18 to 25 be automatically registered into the military draft pool beginning in December. Young men are already required to register at age 18, but the proposed change would make the registration automatic, reportedly saving the agency money and streamlining the process.

“This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources. SSS will implement the change by December 2026, resulting in a streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment,” the federal agency’s website states.

President Donald Trump signed the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act in December, mandating automatic registration, and the SSS was “engaged with Congress throughout the NDAA process” regarding the proposed changes.

“Federal law requires nearly all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants to register at age 18. The agency permits males up to age 25 to complete their registration with the Selective Service System,” the agency notes. “In a national emergency, the Selective Service System will use the registry to provide personnel to the Department of War and alternative service for conscientious objectors, if authorized by the President and Congress.”

There has not been a draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War, and women are still exempt from registering.

“This will also allow us to rededicate resources — basically that means money — towards [readiness] and towards mobilization … rather than towards education and advertising campaigns driven to register people,” Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), who sponsored the language in the proposal, said at the time, according to the Military Times.

Reports of the proposed change set off panicked social media reactions.
