A swing state’s Supreme Court took a considerable shift to the left Tuesday night, furthering a trend and presenting a bleak outlook for local conservatives ahead of several other key elections.

Despite all the demonization by Democrats and the negative corporate media coverage, the 2024 election found President Donald Trump dunking on his detractors with a sweep of all seven swing states. The same could not be said for the wake of the outcome in Wisconsin, as yet another conservative seat was chipped away with the victory of Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor.

Described as a “commanding win” by Decision Desk HQ, the former Democrat state representative overcame the GOP-supported Maria Lazar Tuesday, thus shifting the balance of the court from 4-3 to 5-2 following the retirement of conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley.

“Once again,” said the abortion-focused Taylor during her victory speech, “Wisconsin showed the entire nation that we believe that the people should be at the center of government and the priority of our judiciary, not the billionaires, not the most powerful and privileged, but the people.”

For her part, Lazar expressed in her concession that “… the fight is not over and we will keep fighting for our courts because they are that important.”

Such a contention fell flat amid the din of Democrats celebrating the potential for expanded judicial activism, put into perspective by Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin, who wrote on X, “Wisconsin voters showed up and sent another big message to Republicans, securing a liberal majority until 2030!”

Tuesday’s result fell just over a year after Elon Musk’s investment of millions failed to successfully move the needle for Waukesha County Judge Brad Schimel, who lost his 2025 Supreme Court election against then-Dane County Judge Susan Crawford in the most expensive judicial contest in U.S. history, a mere two years after the balance of the court had shifted to the left following more than a decade of control

The potential to make matters worse looms large as yet another open-seat Wisconsin Supreme Court election is set for 2027, as conservative Justice Annette Ziegler indicated in March that she too would not be seeking re-election to another 10-year term.

What’s more, Wisconsin, which also happens to be the state where Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was convicted of a felony for aiding an illegal alien in evading U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has a gubernatorial race in 2026 with incumbent Gov. Tony Evers (D) declining a bid for re-election.

While the primary to select the nominees is slated for August, Democrats are looking beyond to November, where they hope to also wrest control of the legislature away from Republicans after 15 years in the minority, leaning heavily into criticism of Trump’s administration.
