To suggest that the quality at The New York Times has fallen off a cliff would be a colossal understatement, with the latest example of the paper’s decline being an error so incredibly stupid that one could be forgiven for thinking it’s satire.
As it ramps up coverage over the rapidly expanding war in Iran, the once venerable “Gray Lady” is unable to resist taking shots at President Donald J. Trump, but in trying to shame him over the treatment of America’s allies in Europe, the paper couldn’t even get the most basic facts straight.
In a Friday headline that unleashed a torrent of mockery, the paper reported “A North American Treaty Organization Without America?” A reference to the military alliance that has been harshly criticized by Trump over the unwillingness to pitch in to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the vital navigational chokepoint that has been shut down by the Islamic Republic.

It is mind-boggling enough that the headline writer didn’t bother to look up NATO to see that the acronym stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but perhaps even more unbelievably – or telling – was that none of the paper’s editors caught the massive goof.
The piece, written by columnist Steven Erlanger, who, according to his NYT bio, “has covered NATO for decades,” does not repeat the error in the headline and only refers to the alliance by its acronym in a screed that bemoans the damage that Trump has done to the longstanding relationship with U.S. allies across the pond.
Ironically, few would have noticed the article, but thanks to the shoddy work by the paper, it went viral for all the wrong reasons, inviting ridicule for the paper over yet another self-inflicted wound to the Times’ credibility.

The NYT should release the names of every editor who read this and did not correct it. They have multiple layers of editors, especially for the print publication.

“A correction will appear in tomorrow’s print edition: ‘A headline with an article on Friday about President Trump’s threats to leave NATO misstated the full name of the body. It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, not the North American Treaty Organization,’” the paper said in a Friday announcement posted to X.
But it’s too late because the damage has already been done to the paper’s careening credibility.
