Rubio reminds reporters he works for the American people, not Europe

Secretary of State Marco Rubio took questions from the media ahead of his flight to France to attend a G7 meeting and the Trump official was clear that he works “for the people of the United States.”

With President Donald J. Trump being overly critical of NATO for its reluctance to assist in the war on Iran, Rubio was asked if he was “concerned” about the reception he would receive at the meeting, with the reporter suggesting that the G7 countries are “not happy with what’s going on.”

“Well, again, I’m not there to make them happy. I get along with all of them on a personal level, and we work with those governments very carefully, but the people I’m interested in making happy are the people of the United States,” Rubio said. “That’s who I work for. I don’t work for France or Germany or Japan. These are all good people. We’re going to have great meetings. But I work for the people of the United States.”

France, which has been very skeptical of the war with Iran, is hosting the G7 meeting near Versailles — the G7 includes the U.S., Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Italy, as well as Japan.

Speaking on the conflict with Iran, Trump said this week that the U.S. was “very disappointed with NATO because NATO has done absolutely nothing.”

“We’re there to protect NATO, to protect them from Russia. But they’re not there to protect us,” said the president on Thursday, adding later: “I never thought we needed them. I was more doing a test.”

Social media users continue to be impressed with the job Rubio is doing as America’s top diplomat — here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
