Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) is giving a masterclass in why Americans should never trust a politician’s words.
Warner is coming under fire for launching his fourth reelection bid for the United States Senate. While there are no official term limits that prevent him from doing this, something he said in 1996 is coming back to bite him.
He announced his decision to file in an X post published Monday morning:
It’s official—I filed for reelection to the U.S. Senate! Hundreds of volunteers across Virginia powered this effort, collecting more than 18,000 signatures. Our grassroots team is strong, organized, and ready to compete everywhere across the Commonwealth. Let’s do this! pic.twitter.com/28pe2Pvsnh

“It’s official—I filed for reelection to the U.S. Senate! Hundreds of volunteers across Virginia powered this effort, collecting more than 18,000 signatures. Our grassroots team is strong, organized, and ready to compete everywhere across the Commonwealth. Let’s do this!” he wrote cheerfully.
This wouldn’t be such a scandalous decision if he hadn’t previously indicated that he would serve no more than two terms.
“I don’t want to be a lifelong politician. My view of public service is something you do for part of your life, not all of your life. That’s why I’ve said that if I’m elected to the U.S. Senate, I will serve no more than two terms,” Warner said at a debate on July 20, 1996.

“Throughout his Senate career, Warner has portrayed himself as a moderate ‘bipartisan, radical centrist,’ but data shows he has voted with Democrats 97% of the time, contradicting his centrist image,” National Today reported.
X users reacted to Warner’s continued breaking of his promise:
But you only wanted two terms!

I guess we don’t need new ideas in our system anymore 🤡

I guess you can’t count. Sen Collins has the same problem. It’s too easy to enrich yourselves to just give it up and the prestige of the position. The people of Virginia are not better off since you’ve went to Congress.

Remember when you first ran AND SUPPORTED TERM LIMITS?
What happened to that Mark? Hate to give up the easy grift?

Resign. We don’t need more of you
