Trump offers GOP guidelines to secure midterms

President Donald Trump listed five areas where he feels the Republican Party ought to focus its attention ahead of the midterms.

Trump offered up the guidance while speaking this Monday at the Republican Members’ Issues Conference in Florida.

“No transgender mutilation surgery for our children,” he said. “Voter ID, citizenship [verification], mail-in ballots, we don’t want men playing in women’s sports.”

He was especially concerned about voter ID

“We’re going to push them to get it done because I don’t think you can politically exist if you’re not going to do voter ID and these things,” he insisted. “I don’t think the people in this country will stand for it. So I’m making my biggest plea tonight.”

Republicans have tried to resolve the ID/citizenship issue through the Save America Act, but it’s stuck in the Senate, where it appears unlikely to move unless the GOP breaks the filibuster.

“My understanding is it would require 51 votes to table amendments,” Sen. John Cornyn recently told NBC News. “So, No. 1, you need 51 senators on the floor, and you need all of them willing to vote to table the amendment. That obviously can be problematic from a number of standpoints.”

“One, you might not be able to defeat them. And secondly, this process could go on for literally weeks, if not months, and still not be successful,” he added.

The good news is there’s a way to “lift” the filibuster without totally excising it out of existence: via a “talking filibuster.”

“So long as all Senate Republicans who have either co-sponsored or publicly supported the legislation show up and present a live quorum, Democrats would have to talk nonstop in order to delay a vote that would require just 51 votes to pass the legislation, rather than the typical 60-vote threshold filibuster,” according to The Federalist.

The White House confirmed last week that the president would also like to add stipulations pertaining to transgender people to the Save America Act.

“He added on some priorities to the SAVE America Act in recent days, namely, no transgender transition surgeries for minors,” White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt revealed. “We are not gonna tolerate the mutilation of young children in this country. No men in women’s sports. The president putting all of these priorities together speaks to how common sense they are.”

Later in the speech on Monday, Trump also spoke about the American people being given money directly so they can purchase their own healthcare.

“We want the money to be paid directly to the people and let the people go out and buy their own healthcare,” he said. “And people love it, they love it. We can own the issue. For the first time ever, Republicans can own that issue.”

Trump referenced the “Great Healthcare Plan,” a White House initiative to “slash prescription drug prices, reduce insurance premiums, hold big insurance companies accountable, and maximize price transparency.”

“This plan will deliver money directly to the American people, not insurance companies, big pharma, and special interest groups—putting patients over industry leaders’ profits, just as he promised,” a White House press release read.

“The Great Healthcare Plan also builds on the successes of his first term by promoting competition, eliminating wasteful spending, and putting consumers back in control,” the press release continued.
