Outrage over Conn. bill that targets parents who pull kids from public school

Democrats in Connecticut are pushing a bill that would require notification to the state’s child welfare agency when kids are pulled out of public school to be homeschooled.

Senate Bill 6 would require school districts to report student withdrawals for homeschooling or other reasons to the Department of Education, prompting a Department of Children and Families check for any open child welfare cases.

Proponents cite the safety of children as the motivating factor, with state Sen. Ceci Maher (D) citing the death of 11-year-old Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-García.

“This is a case of just trying to make sure that what happened in the Mimi case, where there was an intent to harm and homeschooling was used as a smokescreen, that that does not happen again,” Maher said.

Homeschool advocates and the Department of Education call it overreach that violates privacy laws and burdens families, with dozens reportedly testifying against it at a March 3 hearing.
