Maryland sheriffs come together, sound off on lawmakers refusing to work with ICE

Sheriffs from seven Maryland counties gathered in the state capitol to blast a new state law that bars cooperation agreements between federal immigration officers and local authorities.

“We as elected sheriffs are fed up with it. You don’t see this many sheriffs in one location in the state at any given time,” said Wicomico County Sheriff Michael Lewis. “This is nothing more than politics over public safety.”

“But we have to come together in unison to stop the ridiculousness that’s going on up here in Annapolis, Maryland. And lawmakers need to wake up and realize Marylanders and the American people want public safety over politics, and they’re not getting it,” Lewis added.

“Maryland lawmakers are blocking local and state police from working with ICE, resulting in Americans being hurt or, worse, killed by criminal aliens,” ICE posted on X, while sharing video of the sheriffs’ gathering.

Gov. Wes Moore (D) recently signed a law banning 287(g) agreements in the state, which allows ICE to deputize local law enforcement officers to carry out immigration enforcement, according to The Hill.

Local sheriffs have since vowed to continue working with ICE in an informal capacity.

They were also speaking out against another bill, the Community Trust Act, which would restrict ICE’s interaction with local police even more.

“The bill would prohibit local police from investigating or arresting a person based on their citizenship status and would prevent them from notifying or transferring potential suspects to ICE without a warrant,” The Hill reported.

Clearly, the effort by Democrats in Maryland to protect illegal aliens by standing in the way of enforcing U.S. immigration laws echoes the message broadcast to America by congressional Democrats when they refused to stand during President Trump’s State of the Union address to reaffirm that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens.”
