Fox News’ Rachel Campos-Duffy warns Trump ‘too cozy’ with Venezuela’s new ‘hardcore communist’ leader

Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy cautioned Friday that President Donald Trump’s administration was ingratiating itself too much with Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez.

Rodríguez became Venezuela’s acting leader after the U.S. military captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Jan. 3. Campos-Duffy said on “Fox and Friends” that Rodríguez was untrustworthy and that Trump asserting they were collaborating well was politically detrimental to him.

“I do want to bring up Venezuela because it’s very important. We’re getting a little too cozy with Delcy Rodríguez. This is a hardcore communist,” Campos-Duffy said. “She can never be trusted. The sooner we move to free and fair elections the better for us. She is detested by the Venezuelan people. María Corina [Machado] will win that election and we will have an actual ally like we do in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia to handle the situation with the Chinese.”

“I am coming to you right now from Miami. Every time President Trump says ‘I’m working well with Delcy Rodríguez,’ he drops five points here in Miami where people hate the communists and know exactly what this is about,” she added. “We need to stabilize, yes, but we need to announce an election date and get to an election, because that’s how we actually have freedom and security in the western hemisphere.”

Trump decided against backing Machado to replace Maduro in the aftermath of the capture.

The president also told The New York Times the U.S. could be running Venezuela for years during an interview published on Jan. 8.

“I would say much longer,” Trump said after the NYT reporters asked him if the U.S. could run Venezuela for a year.

“Only time will tell,” the president also said during the interview.

The Trump administration also announced after the capture of Maduro that it would govern Venezuela until it carried out what officials described as a “judicious” transition.

Moreover, Trump told reporters on Feb. 13 that he intended to visit Venezuela, according to Al Jazeera.

“I’m going to make a visit to Venezuela,” the president asserted, although he said he had not determined a date.

Trump has frequently commended Rodríguez, according to the outlet.

“They’ve done a great job,” he said on Feb. 13. “The oil is coming out, and a lot of money is being paid.”
