Texas county drops proposal to rename highway after Charlie Kirk

Texas will not be naming a portion of highway after slain TPUSA Charlie Kirk following Monday’s county commission meeting.

Bastrop County Commissioner David Glass added the proposal, which sought to rename a portion of highway known as FM 969 to the “Charlie Kirk Corridor,” to the meeting’s agenda. “Background information” added explains that the county “recognizes the importance of honoring distinguished individuals whose commitment to civic values, public engagement, and leadership has made a lasting contribution to political life in the State of Texas and the United States,” and “Kirk’s activism emphasized civic participation, free speech, and political engagement among youth, building a national network of student activists and influencing political discourse on college campuses and beyond.”

Local reports indicate that over 100 people showed up to voice their displeasure with the idea, and Glass ended up asking to table the measure, resulting in no action taken.

In a message to The Statesman, Glass indicated that he has no plans to resubmit the renaming resolution.

“Not all of us are going to agree, but we can agree to disagree. I absolutely don’t agree with everything Charlie Kirk said,” he said.

X users reacted to the story, with some pointing out that Kirk lacked a connection to the local area:
