Gunmen assaulted armored vehicles that ended in a fiery battle with Italian military police on Monday on state road 613, which connects the cities of Lecce and Brindisi.
The suspects blocked the two armored vehicles with cash in transit using a vehicle on fire to force the armored vehicles to stop, according to Italien News. The Carabinieri — a militarized law enforcement agency of the Italian government — were called to the scene and engaged the suspects in a firefight while the suspects attempted to flee from the scene, the outlet reported.
Suspects used explosives on the armored vehicles to access the vehicle’s contents, according to the Italien News. The vehicles are owned by Gruppo Battistolli, a security company specializing in armored transportation for cash and other valuable assets, the Daily Mail reported.
A video taken of the incident — first shared by Deputy for the Italian Democratic Party Claudio Stefanazzi — was posted to X on Monday. The video shows the vehicles surrounded by armed men blocking the armored vans and a van belonging to Gruppo Battistolli exploding from the rear.

The video depicts multiple masked gunmen, some prominently wearing white overalls and carrying what appears to be semi-automatic rifles.
The suspects fled the scene and shot at police chasing them, striking a police car 3 times with bullets and ramming an unmarked police car, according to the Daily Mail.
Italian law enforcement was successful in arresting three suspects involved with the robbery and is still searching for other suspects involved in the incident, Il Messagero reported in Italian.
The gunmen were ultimately unable to steal the contents of the armored vehicles, according to the Daily Mail.
The robbers were identified as being from the Foggiano territory, which is known for gangs that specialize in robbery on armored vehicles, Sky TG24 reported in Italian.
No one involved in the incident has been reported as injured, according to Italien News.
