A Minnesota man allegedly impersonated an FBI agent and attempted to free Luigi Mangione, the man accused of assassinating a healthcare executive, from a New York jail, ABC News reported Thursday.
Mark Anderson, 36, was charged with impersonating a federal agent after arriving at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center with a court order to release Mangione, law enforcement sources told ABC News. When Bureau of Prisons (BOP) personnel reportedly asked to see Anderson’s credentials, federal prosecutors said he presented a Minnesota driver’s license and “threw at the BOP officers numerous documents,” according to the publication.
Anderson reportedly said he had weapons in his bag, which contained a pizza cutter and a barbecue fork, according to ABC News. Anderson is expected to appear in court later on Thursday, according to the publication.
The criminal complaint, viewed by ABC News, said that Anderson claimed he had paperwork “signed by a judge.” Law enforcement sources told the publication that Anderson was looking to release Mangione.
Mangione is being held at MDC-Brooklyn, awaiting federal and state trials in connection with the December 2024 killing of Brian Thompson, the UnitedHealthcare CEO. Mangione is due in court Friday, and the judge presiding over the federal case may rule on whether the death penalty remains a potential sentencing option upon a conviction, ABC News reported.
Notably, a New York judge dropped terrorism charges against Mangione in September.
