CNN legal analyst Elie Honig immediately corrected former MS NOW host Tiffany Cross Tuesday after she claimed the man accused of assassinating Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk was a “right-wing extremist.”
Tyler Robinson was facing capital murder charges in Utah, with prosecutors saying he fatally shot Kirk during a Sept. 10 “Prove Me Wrong” event at Utah Valley University. Cross claimed that political violence was not coming from the left, even asserting that President Donald Trump was targeted by “right-wing” would-be assassins in a discussion that took place hours after Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota was attacked.
“I take your point. And I accept the data. I’m not saying it’s exactly 50-50 equal. But let’s also not forget Charlie Kirk was murdered the President-” Honig said before Cross interrupted with, “Not by a left-wing extremist. That person espoused very rightly (inaudible.)”

Republican Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah outlined some of the evidence of Robinson’s left-wing political leanings during both a Sept. 12 press conference and on Sunday shows, including ABC’s “This Week” and “State of the Union” on CNN that aired Sept. 14. Several media outlets also reported on Robinson’s “leftist” ideology and left-wing slogans etched on the ammunition found in the rifle allegedly used in the assassination.
“Look, if you look at the targets, if you look at people in office, there’s, there’s people on both sides,” Honig said as Cross tried to interrupt. “There’s Josh Shapiro, there’s Melissa Hortmann now there’s Ilhan Omar on this side. There’s Donald Trump on this side. There’s Charlie Kirk on this side.”
“But wait, you’re saying that but don’t know the right-wing people,” Cross claimed.
After a further exchange, when Honig again mentioned the previous attempts on Trump’s life, Cross fired back.
“But it’s not ingenious. That is BS. And even the attacks that you’re referencing, Elie, those were right wing people. Like give me the-” Cross said before Honig cut in with, “That’s just not true.”
Vincent Taormina, a former classmate of Thomas Crooks, the suspected would-be assassin who slightly wounded Trump during a July 13, 2024, campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, recounted Crooks questioning his support of Trump, citing the fact Taormina was Hispanic. Ryan Wesley Routh, who was convicted on charges stemming from a Sept. 15, 2024, attempt to assassinate Trump, was a strong backer of Ukraine and opposed Trump’s hard line on Iran, citing those reasons in a letter prosecutors submitted as evidence.
Crooks was a one-time supporter of Trump, but seemed to turn against him in January 2020, according to YouTube posts uncovered by the Tucker Carlson Network.
ABC benched late-night host Jimmy Kimmel in September after Nexstar and Sinclair Broadcasting announced they would preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in the wake of comments Kimmel made about the assassination of Kirk that implied Robinson was a Trump supporter.
Robinson told his romantic partner, a biological male who identifies as a transgender woman, that he “had enough of [Kirk’s] hatred” and also urged him to delete the messages, according to the charging document released by the Utah County district attorney.
