NFL rubs salt in MAGA’s Bad Bunny wound with pick to perform in opening ceremony

The National Football League (NFL) is continuing its streak of controversial decisions with its pick to perform the opening ceremony.

President Donald Trump, in particular, may have a lot to say about Green Day being selected to fill the important role, given the lead singer’s well-documented disgust for the leader. Billie Joe Armstrong has never sugar-coated his feelings about Trump, sometimes using his shows as a platform to air his feelings about the man he calls a “fat bastard” who is running a “fascist government.

Armstrong has even tweaked the lyrics of his infamous “American Idiot” to say “I’m not part of the redneck agenda” and “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.” It’s unclear whether the group will use the Super Bowl to further their anti-Trump messaging.

“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard! We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!” the singer said after receiving the honor.

This comes after the NFL announced that Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny will perform the halftime show during the 2026 Super Bowl, a choice that didn’t sit well with many on the right. Even Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem weighed in on the pick, who sent a harsh message to the decision-makers at the league.

“They suck, and we’ll win, and God will bless us, and we’ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day, and they won’t be able to sleep at night because they don’t know what they believe, and they’re so weak. We’ll fix it,” she said.

Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has previously refused to perform in the United States because  “f*cking ICE could be outside [my concerts]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

Noem suggested that he was correct to be worried, and that agents may be stationed “all over that place.”

“So yeah, we’ll be all over that place … we’re gonna enforce the law. So I think people should not be coming to the Super Bowl unless they’re law-abiding Americans who love this country.”
