Minneapolis Police Chief goes on 60 Minutes to criticize ICE agent who shot Good

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara is publicly questioning the decision-making of the ICE agent who shot Renee Good.

The shooting death of Good sparked a wave of backlash in the city and has deeply divided Americans. While some believe Good’s death was “senseless violence” from a federal agent, others claim that the officer’s life was in danger and he was forced to make a tragic split-second decision. Those who believe the woman should not have been killed have taken to the streets in Minneapolis to make their voices heard, and now the city’s police chief appears to be taking sides.

O’Hara said that it is “not clear to me why he appears to be in the path of the vehicle more than once,” implying the agent intentionally placed himself in the path of Good’s Honda Pilot. “When you approach someone in a vehicle in a law enforcement encounter, there are very basic steps you take to ensure the officer’s safety and de-escalate the situation.”

While walking down the street to speak to correspondent Cecilia Vega, an irate passer-by screamed at O’Hara, calling him a “pig.”

“How dare you let this happen here? You should be ashamed. You should be f**king sick. F**king pig,” the person screeched.

At another point in the 60 Minutes interview, O’Hara mentioned that the local 911 lines have been bombarded with calls related to ICE operations in the city. Complaints include abandoned vehicles and those who have been pepper-sprayed and subjected to tear gas.

He suggested that “targeted, precise pre-planned operations on violent offenders” are a “good thing.” However, he also believes that “people in the [Trump] administration don’t understand the reality of what is happening on the street.”

Speaking about the man who insulted O’Hara, the chief had a firm but fair assessment.

“People have a right to say disrespectful things… however, they cannot physically obstruct law enforcement from performing a function. Those things are illegal.”
