X suspends Twitter’s account for rules violation

X has at least temporarily suspended the account for Twitter, the platform’s old name before it was bought by billionaire Elon Musk, who, along with changing its name, restored free speech as part of the rebrand.

On Sunday, the Twitter account that bore the old logo of a chirping bird on a blue background was showing as “Account Suspended” with verbiage reading “X suspends accounts which violate the X Rules.”

The notice provided a link to X’s rules, but no specifics on which particular rule was violated that merited the suspension.

As of Monday morning, the suspension notice is no longer displayed, and the legacy account is now showing as no longer being active.

“This account is no longer active. Follow @x for updates,” it reads.

“Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app. This is not simply a company renaming itself, but doing the same thing,” Musk wrote in a July 2023 post to the platform.

“The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140-character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video,” the Tesla/SpaceX CEO said. “In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird.”

X users chirped in with their takes on the mysterious move, which could be the final chapter in the story of the old Twitter.

In other Musk-related news, the former DOGE boss has seemingly patched up his relationship with President Donald J. Trump after an ugly fallout last year, sharing a picture of his “lovely dinner” with the president and First Lady Melania Trump last week.

“Had a lovely dinner last night with @POTUS and @FLOTUS 2026 is going to be amazing!” Musk wrote.

And across the pond, the authoritarian regime of U.K. PM Kier Starmer appears to be on the verge of banning X using the pretense that AI tool Grok is being used to create sexualized images of people without their permission, in what is just an excuse to further crack down on the free speech platform, which is viewed as a mortal threat by European tyrants.

“They just want to suppress free speech,” Musk said of the potential ban.
