Sean Spicer goes nuclear on CBS news anchor for casting himself as outsider

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer rebuked CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil on “The Huddle” on Monday over his pledge to prioritize “the average American” over “elites” in his coverage.

Dokoupil, who became the new host of “CBS Evening News” in January, said during a Thursday message to viewers that the media has frequently “missed the story” and that he could relate to Americans who believed news coverage failed to “reflect” their lived experiences. Spicer argued on the podcast that Dokoupil played a role in the very media culture he was now criticizing during his tenure on “CBS Mornings.”

“You got to go back to what he said. ‘I was you.’ No, dude. You were the problem. This isn’t some guy that was shouting at the rooftop. Tony is the problem. And for him to gaslight us and act like he was somehow the understands and identifies with is total BS,” Spicer said. “This guy was part of the problem. He sat around on the round table on their morning show and was part of the problem.”

“For him to gaslight the American people and act like somehow he is one of the saviors of the movement is ridiculous. If he had sat back and said, I was part of the problem, as opposed to I was you, I could at least buy it,” he continued. “But this is so ridiculous. If you believe this, that he is your savior, DM me. I’ve got great opportunities for oceanfront property in Montana for you.”

While at “CBS Mornings,” Dokoupil challenged prominent Democrats, such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, whom he pressed in March about his party’s lack of trust in his leadership. He also got into a heated clash with Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren in October regarding voting to shut the government down over healthcare.

“The point is on too many stories, the press has missed the story because we’ve taken into account the perspective of advocates and not the average American,” Dokoupil said in his message. “Or we put too much weight in the analysis of academics or elites and not enough on you. And I know this because at certain points, I have been you. I have felt this way too. I felt like what I was seeing and hearing on the news didn’t reflect what I was seeing and hearing in my own life.”

Moreover, former CBS investigative reporter Catherine Herridge asserted on Thursday that CBS News executives postponed airing her reports on the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop until after the 2022 midterm elections. Bari Weiss became CBS News’ editor-in-chief in October, prompting staffing turnover, layoffs, and significant changes to its political coverage.
