The leftist group “Free DC” teaches Washingtonians how they can use jury duty to defend the “marginalized” from “systemic biases” in criminal cases, its website shows.
Free DC will host an in-person event Jan. 12, in tandem with the prison abolition group Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, to discuss how jurors should “protect our people especially those with marginalized identities who are disproportionately targeted by the criminal legal system,” according to an event description. Free DC is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump’s National Guard deployment and increased federal law enforcement presence to stop D.C. crime, with The Washington Post dubbing the organization “the face of the capital’s anti-Trump resistance.”
Free DC and Harriet’s Wildest Dreams did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
“Jury duty is not just a civic responsibility; it’s a powerful tool for ensuring fairness and justice,” Free DC’s event description says. “As community members, our participation in juries is vital to safeguarding the rights of those who are most vulnerable to systemic biases. By serving on a jury, we can influence outcomes and help create a more equitable legal process.”
Free DC is a “fiscally sponsored special project” of two charities backed by the nonprofit giant Tides Foundation and left-wing philanthropist George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, The New York Post reported.
The group previously responded to the Nov. 26 shooting of two West Virginia National Guardsmen on patrol in D.C. by arguing on X that “the Guard should not be here.” The attack, which authorities resulted in the arrest of an Afghan national, killed one member and wounded another.
“It is unsafe for both the Guard and our communities,” Free DC said in an X post. “Our deepest condolences go to the two West Virginia families who now face a heartbroken season as a result of this unnecessary deployment.”
