Australia’s response to the Bondi Beach terrorist attack targeting Jews at a Hanukkah celebration continues to boggle the mind.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese railed about the “rise of right-wing extremist groups” after the shooting, which left 15 people dead and dozens injured. The gunmen were a father-son duo who were reportedly “motivated by Islamic State ideology.” The father, Sajid Akram, was killed by police, and his son, Naveed Akram, “suffered critical injuries.”
In addition to a crackdown on hate speech following the mass shooting, the Australian government plans to review immigration laws to ensure that people with antisemitic or racist views cannot migrate to the country. Another predictable step, given the country’s liberal leadership, is gun confiscation via a national buy-back scheme.

“We expect hundreds of thousands of firearms will be collected and destroyed through this scheme,” the prime minister said at a press conference, explaining that new legislation will be passed to fund the program.
Australia has some of the world’s toughest gun restrictions, and the buy-back scheme is expected to be the biggest since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, when a lone gunman killed 35 people.
There were an estimated 3.2 million firearms nationwide at the time, with the buy-back plan resulting in more than 650,000 firearms being destroyed, according to ABC.
At this rate, there will be few firearms left for Aussies to protect themselves amid a record surge in immigration.
Other plans being considered include accelerating the development of a national firearms register, limiting the number of guns a single person can own, making Australian citizenship a condition of holding a gun license, and further restricting the types of weapons that are legal.
