Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Jaime Harrison lectured about the need for his party to be inclusive on a Wednesday episode of “At Our Table with Jaime Harrison,” despite the party’s platform excluding men during his tenure.
Under a page titled “Who We Serve” on the Democratic Party’s website, numerous demographic groups were listed — including black Americans, disabled Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, young people and women — but not men, according to a 2024 archived version of the page. However, Harrison criticized “purity tests” within the Democratic Party on his podcast and said that it needed to do better to live up to its claim of having a “big tent.”

“I think these purity tests that we see within our party also are very harmful. You know, if we say that we are the big tent party, then that means you can’t dismiss everybody just because the one issue they don’t agree with you on,” Harrison said. “I mean, if I find common ground with you on 75 or 85% of the things, well, then let’s work on the 75 or 80% of things and then we can fight like hell on the other 20% later on, but it’s just, we’re not one dimensional, we’re three dimensional people.”
“And I see it so, so much, and I think that is a big turn off,” he continued. “Why would I want to be with a party that doesn’t appreciate me for all of me instead of they see one aspect?”
Harrison’s guest, former Vice President Kamala Harris, responded that the Democratic Party has “work to do.”
President Donald Trump won the male vote in all three of his election campaigns by margins of 8% or more. He achieved his biggest margin with the demographic — 12% — in 2024 against Harris, according to the Center for American Women and Politics.
Democratic strategist James Carville argued on “The Tara Palmeri Show” in April that men loathed the Democratic Party because they felt like the party was condescending toward them.
“I think the Democratic Party has what I would call an NPR problem. You know, don’t eat hamburgers, don’t watch football, don’t drink beer,” Carville said. “It’s all bad for you. Like god damn, man, you know, get off my ass for a minute! And I think it’s something like that. I think Democrats come across as like culturally superior, ‘we know what’s good for you.’”
