Nancy Mace offers ‘hard truth’: Nancy Pelosi more effective than any Republican this century

Yet another Republican congresswoman aiming for a Capitol Hill departure had high praise for California Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D) speakership over “any Republican this century.”

In recent weeks, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene made waves over a public falling out with President Donald Trump that preceded her announced resignation from Congress. Now, just as the Georgia Republican praised the “incredible career” of Pelosi, gubernatorial hopeful South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace chose to do likewise, writing an op-ed published by the New York Times.

“Here’s a hard truth Republicans don’t want to hear: Nancy Pelosi was a more effective House speaker than any Republican this century. I agree with her on essentially nothing. But she understood something we don’t: No majority is permanent,” wrote Mace, who’d entered a crowded primary field earlier this year to lead the Palmetto State.

Titled, “What’s the Point of Congress?” Mace’s op-ed went on to assert, “When Democrats hold the majority, they ram through the most progressive policies they can. They deliver for the coalition that elected them while they are in power. Republicans do the opposite.”

“We get the majority, then become petrified of losing it,” she continued. “We pass the most moderate policies we can pressure conservatives to accept, betraying the coalition that delivered us here. Ms. Pelosi was ruthless, but she got things done. The current House is restrictive and ineffective, control with barely any results. Republican leadership seems intent on replicating her model of consolidation without her bold vision to push through the policies that won us the majority.”

Not long before the president had dubbed Greene, “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown,” the Georgia lawmaker had similarly praised Pelosi in contrast to House Republicans, telling CNN’s “The Situation Room,” “I will praise Nancy Pelosi. She had an incredible career for her party. I served under her speakership in my first term of Congress, and I’m very impressed at her ability to get things done. I wish we could get things done for our party like Nancy Pelosi was able to deliver for her party.”

Mace lamented in the op-ed that the “system in the House promotes control by party leaders over accountability and achievement.”

“No one can be held responsible for inaction, so far too little gets done,” she added. “The obstacles to achieving almost anything are enough to make any member who came to Washington with noble intentions ask: Why am I even here?”

Though the congresswoman was less critical of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), dubbing him “better than his predecessor,” former California Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R), Mace claimed sexism was prevalent in the House Republican Conference.

“Women will never be taken seriously until leadership decides to take us seriously, and I’m no longer holding my breath,” wrote the lawmaker who referred to the conference chair position as the “token slot, the designated leadership role for the top woman in the conference, while the real power lies in other offices.”

Ultimately, the congresswoman concluded that failure by the GOP to pass bills tackling border security, affordability, healthcare, and law and order would amount to a lost majority. “And we will deserve it.”
