A closer look at an elected official railing against immigration enforcement in his city prompted calls for a Department of Homeland Security investigation into potential fraud to become a citizen.
“Something ain’t right here…”
Over the weekend, Charlotte, North Carolina, became the latest city to receive a national sovereignty reminder as Operation Charlotte’s Web cracked down on criminal illegal aliens. As 81 arrests were made on Saturday alone, an admission from Charlotte City Council member-elect Juan Diego Mazuera Arias (D) that he came to the United States illegally drew attention to contradictions about his naturalization, his connection to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D), and a potentially fraudulent marriage.
Within two weeks of being elected to represent District 5, the openly homosexual Arias stepped on a soapbox to demonize immigration enforcement officials, and proudly declared, “I grew up undocumented … and today I stand before you as not only the first Latino, but the first formerly undocumented member of the city council.”
As he went on to assert federal officials were “terrorizing our neighborhoods,” former U.S. Department of Energy nuclear scientist Matt Van Swol served up a rundown of the member-elect’s background that included a “FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIP” to Queens University of Charlotte because he was in the country illegally before he went on to work as a staffer for Ocasio-Cortez.

In addition to being only one former staffer to the open border-supporting Squad member who had come to the country illegally, as an Ecuadorian-born campaign staffer self-deported earlier in 2025 amid Ocasio-Cortez’s defense of remarks on avoiding deportation couched as clarification of constitutional rights, Arias’ marriage prompted questions about possible fraud as videos surfaced with contradictory statements about when the Colombian-born man began to identify as homosexual.
Van Swol first shared a clip of Arias detailing that he had married a woman at 18 years old, “I fell in love in high school with my best friend, um, and we got married, um, at the age of 18. And that is how I got my citizenship.”
However, as the caption for the clip highlighted the incredulous detail that the marriage ended in divorce “after they BOTH discovered they were gay… WHAAAT?!!!” the subsequent clip cast doubt on that reality as Van Swol explained, “An anonymous source has sent me a video of Juan Arias claiming he came out as gay at the age of 13!!!!! So if he was openly gay at 13, why did he marry a woman at 18 and claim he discovered he was gay after they were married?! He clearly contradicts himself here @DHSgov!!!”

The details about the member-elect found many calling for an investigation into Arias for alleged “textbook immigration fraud,” and arguing in favor of both his deportation and his denaturalization as a U.S. citizen.
I’m no expert, but @DHSgov I would investigate this as potential citizenship / immigration fraud.
MAYBE this is true, but boy is it extremely suspicious.
